Excuse my lack of knowledge - what does the horn button look like on a 1951 BD DeLuxe? Is it the exact same white thing as on a ordinary Split Window Beetle....or the 53/54-style Wolfsurg castle type from the Beetle? Any pictures ot proove your answer? |

Same as an early oval, The base is the same just painted with a gold castle slapped on it.

51s do not have the rings in the outer edge of the button, they are smooth.
I do not know if the center is different. |
I think the center is all white, too. I'm trying to recall what is on Matt D's '52... _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

All BD horn buttons are smooth upto end of 52 (I believe). Deluxes were white, kombis and panels were black. Not sure about standards _________________

my 54 non- stock baja sc,with stock wheel/ button
I had just polished and waxed the dash!:
very original '54 kombi, VIN 20-105 xxx
'53 standard:
I don't know if the castle is usual for standards, but it had it when I got the bus which had been sitting for ages, with 66 tags on.
sorry..no idea about the '51 deluxe button. I just like the dash pics! _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

hi Scotty! ...well, I guess that's just one of several things that were gone when Chris H. sold it... when I sold the bus to him, the button wasn't on, that's right, the button was at my place, because it was broken (back in '94, when I bought the bus, it was allready broken!!) so I fixed it once with some cheap glue... it was invisible, the top of it was still intact, as you can see in the picture, but when you took the button off, it was like glue everywhere ...after a few years, the glue wasn't strong enough, and the hornbutton "jumped off" because of the spring... I was gonna glue it again, but never did it... so, what happened?? well, Chris H. bought it january, and when I came to Peppercorn that year, in July, I GAVE him the hornbutton, in PARTS, so he had to put some glue on it and put it back... so, he didn't??? well, I think Bobby also told me the gearbox wasn't in the bus, right Scotty?? you know why? the old eastern german owner told me, in january 1995, that the gearbox came from a 1942 - 43 VW from "the war"... and yes, after checking it, it WAS a real Kübelwagen one!! ...and I told Chris H. too what was under the bus, so I guess he also had a client for that gearbox ...I never asked Bobby if Chris gave him the 2 NOS cargo doors I gave him in the deal?? Scotty, I think not many people in the UK know for how much I sold my rusty bus, including some real goodies... and then see it being sold 2 years later for... pounds ... ...well, good to know even the broken !! hornbutton "dissapeared"... |

I don't think Bobby got the doors in the deal.

Chris told me how much he paid for the bus. Probably a good deal for you and Chris at the time, but "cheap" by today's standards. |

Deluxe 20-040427 Dec 52 (smooth)
Deluxe 20-042295 Jan 53 (ribbed)
The Hornbecker DLX (Feb 52) & Chewie's 52 (Sept 52) also have the smooth all-white button
i think Eccles' book says
Quote: |
Introduced after bus 20 041 711 (Dec 52):
New longer handbrake/new vent wings/new heater knob/new choke knob/new <ribbed> horn button/new 'low' exterior mirror arm/new licence plate light/new footrest <style 3> |
Last Bus in Nov 52 was 20 039772
Last Bus in Dec 52 was 20 041857
The book also contains the feature on Drew's 51 Standard (I'm guessing the button is black)
