I use a torch to expand it, hot plates are too slow. _________________ Glenn

I use a torch too. Never fails. Just drops in there like a loose coin.
Don't worry you are not going to damage it. |

Does it have a black oxide finish or is it raw steel?
The black oxide ones I've used in the past needed barely any heating.
I installed a CB Performance spacer (which was raw steel) and it was a very tight fit on a DMS 69mm crank even after heating. Had to tap it home with a brass drift.
I use an old toaster oven _________________ Richard Sedoris - VW Performance & Machine - Youngstown, OH

It looked black now blue I'll take it up to work and use a torch I just tried it again at 30 minutes and the hot plate on high. The glove's I used were smokin and within 2 minutes it was cool to the touch. About 10 minutes later I went to get the dist drive gear wich I took off at the same time and it burnt the shit out of me. _________________ Let my name be Feared at the gates of Hell as I exault the Savior!!

I always believe in the stock spacer untill one of the thick German with the VW stamped on it open up and destroyed the case and parts around it. This was in an limited engine off road race car where the driver shifted missed a shift, go down a gear instead of going up. Who knows what kind of RPM the engine was turning when it happen. After that all the racing engines I did used a racer spacer.
Still use the stock spacer on stock and play engines. |

Okay let me make shure I'm getting this in the correct sequence.
#3 main bearing
steel timing gear
racer spacer
brass drive gear
snap ring
#4 main bearing
then is it a snap ring
and the oil slinger
then woodruf key
or is their only one snapring I can't tell by the pic in my book _________________ Let my name be Feared at the gates of Hell as I exault the Savior!!

I have been only using the stock spacer on modified engines, but I don't run them past 6,000rpms... In my case and application and rpms, they do good.. Never a problem in 30 years.. ----George _________________ Home of Karacostas Car ( VW) Repair

Rare for the snap ring to fit tight. No woory, it in't going any where, but if want you canget all the oil off and put some green lok tite on it before you install.

The snap ring will not go anywhere, but you do not want it loose in its groove or it will eat the groove as the crank turns.
After you have put the snap ring in the groove, pull up on all the gears up against the snap ring with a puller. The small pressure will keep it from moving around. There is not really any up and down movement on the gearstack but that tiny bit of push can secure the snap ring against the groove.
Apply just enough pressure to move the gearstack up a little. The snap ring will just peg itself against the groove.
Enjoy. |

I often question the need for the ring at all.
