Does anyone know how to determine the gear ratio in a vw tranny without tearing into it? the ring and pinion to be more specific.
Seems like one could engage 4th gear and turn the input shaft by hand and count the revolutions-- No ?

Yes...

If you know and give gear ration you can turn the input shaft and by counting the rotation of the output flanges determine the ratio.

Here's the world's best gear chart:
http://sandlizrd.baja.com/gears.htm

Look at the far right column for your total in 4th.
BTW, good luck telling the difference between these:
'67-'72 (AH) (a) 3.88 3.80 2.06 1.26 0.89 4.125 3.67
'73-'77 (AT) 3.79 3.78 2.06 1.26(b) 0.93(b) 3.875 3.60
