Vacuum Leaks and/or "False Air"

OK, so if I use my vacuum gauge to search for vacuum leaks on my '78 Westy, it's only going to help me with leaks downstream of the throttle plate, right? Anything leaking upstream is "false air" which is bad, but will not influence the vacuum gauge reading in the plenum..... Right?

right, but how are you going to use a vacuum gauge to check for leaks?

I was thinking I'd plug hoses coming off the plenum one at a time and see if the vacuum level increased at idle (it's low at 10 inches right now).
