I finally dug my stashed set of pop outs out of storage last night and got serious about installing them on something. It's been a long time since I have looked at them and I want to verify I still have everything. Can someone take a shot of how their hinges mount to the body? I think I may be missing something there.

Thanks

Google: How to install pop out windows in a Volkswagen bug.

In the list, go down to a YouTube video of a guy with a red/orange beetle. There's a baby crying the whole time, and road noise, but this video is extremely thorough.

The video I was speaking of was 7:51 minutes log. It was for a later beetle with the holes pre drilled.

Definitely cut the headliner to clear room for the hinges. I used a pick to poke through and locate the pre drilled holes.

Below you will see the various parts needed except for the hinge cover...
Some hinges are nearly impossible to use but if you do not have the orig kind then the new hinges are all you can use.
The screws that are used to hold the hinge to door window body frame are taper head and have washers.. The proper screws are needed.

Wolfsburg West or Cip1 has everything you will need... They use to provide a kit buy I can no longer find that.

A bit about the hinge difficulty. Note my post.

Nice hinges. These from what I know are old.. All the new ones are shiny metal and instead of square shape to hold the metal plate are rounded and very difficult to get the pillar screws started...

Reviving this old thread for a quick question. How do I remove the rear/locking hinge from the pop-out glass? The original ones are super-ratty and pitted, I have nice original ones to install, but can't see how to pop out (pun unintended) the clip or whatever holds it in place.

Thanks!

There's a E clip under the hinge.

That was a pita. The clip crumbled when I removed it.

Installing the replacement was a total.PITA because the new rubber seals are thick enough to make it really hard to get enough crush for the new clip. But it's done!

Recently installed a set of pop out windows on my car as well (mainly to help w/ ventilation a bit during prolonged summertime trips). I had read about some folks using clamps or other similar tools to compress the stack-up of the hinge, seals, and outside pin, to aid in installing those little clips. So I tried similar with a long-jawed clamp and short bit of bolt shaft (i.e. the latter resting on center part of hinge pivot mount and clearing rest of the hinge arm). It worked pretty well -- wasn't too hard to get the new clips in place once everything got pressed together close enough.

I just installed new latches, new seals, and new "C" clips into the holes on a pair of old pop-out window glass. Installing the "C" clips was very difficult for me. We definitely need to compress the parts of the latch and seals that pass through the hole in the window glass so that groove for the "C" clip is exposed and ready for the "C" clip to be inserted. Also I recommend getting one or two extra "C" clips because these can quickly break or get lost.

For the first window glass I was successful after about 30 minutes of trying. I placed the window horizontally on a table with a very small block of wood under the chrome button for the outer side, pressed down on the part of the latch on the inner side directly above, and then squeezed a small pair of curved pliers with one of the arms of the pliers on the "C" clip and the other arm of the curved pliers on the other side of the latch opposite the "C" clip. This took many attempts until finally the "C" clip snapped into place.

For the second window glass I was successful after about 90 minutes of trying. Pressing down with one hand and squeezing the curved pliers with the hand was just not working. Finally I was successful when my wife pressed down on the latch on the inner side directly above the chrome button on the outer side for me, and I pushed the "C" clip into place with a Robertson #2 screwdriver (with a square tip), and I used my other hand to hold the window still so it wouldn't slide around while I was pressing on that "C" clip. A team effort that also took several attempts until the "C" clip again finally snapped into place.

Here is what didn't work for me:

- Using a clamp to squeeze everything together because either my clamps were too small or they were siding around on the curved latch. Plus I was nervous that they would scratch the chrome button and/or chrome latch.

- Pressing the "C" clip into place using any of my small flat screwdrivers because they kept slipping off the "C" clip.

- Using needle-nose pliers to hold and press the "C" clip into place from one side.
