I'll bet the majority of my 500+ posts on this forum were about my 1967 bug.
Several years ago my dad gave me a type-3 long block that he had converted into a type-1. But the block had spent a couple winters outside half-buried in ice, snow, slush. So when I tore it apart I found one rusty cylinder. Everything else looked okay.
I found someone online selling used cylinders so I ordered one. But when the bug was back on the road it had an engine knock. So I ordered new cylinders and pistons. While putting them in I busted one and had to put one of the used pistons back in. And still had the knock.
I contacted all of the ACVW suppliers and none were willing to sell me one piston/cylinder. Then I contacted AA. I talked (on a phone!) with the owner, Ron. He was willing to sell me one p/c and send it here, all quite reasonably. I spent the weekend putting it in and for the first time in the 5 years I've owned it, I've got a bug that doesn't have a knock.
So hats off to Ron at AA Performance Products.

Absolute garbage low quality Chinese products. Avoid at all costs!
AA cylinders contact the bumps on stock cylinder heads
AA cylinders are overall the same height as used Mahle
AA cylinders are almost 1 fin taller in comparison to Mahle

Wow! I see that but also wondering are your heads new or use that have been fly cut? I know when flycutting heads you often need to clearance those bumps on stock heads. |
