Hopefully somebody awesome will step up and purchase the operation to keep things going. _________________ "...these cars were preferred by the racers because the strut front suspension results in far superior handling than the regular torsion bar front end..." - Keith Seume. |

Well, this is distressing news!
Jose fixed a bent crank for me last year. His work is second to none.
I was holding out hope one of his shop guy's would pick up the business. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Wow - I'm very sorry to hear.
Last December I visited Los Angeles, and visiting DPR was one of my priority VW shops to visit.
Jose was extremely nice, and gave me the shop tour, showing me the process he puts each crankshaft through, including stroking, grinding, and balancing. He happily answered the dozens of questions I asked him.
I ordered an 82mm crank, and sent down my flywheel, pressure plate, and pulley to be balanced together after I got back home.
A couple weeks later my parts showed up - beautiful work.
I'm very sorry to hear he's retiring, but he deserves it. Another shop closes though. _________________ 1963 Manx copy

I have 4 crankshafts in there right now! Had no clue he was selling. I better call and ask a few questions! _________________ Jimbo

The cost for doing vw engines now went through the roof. I have a T4 engine to do and i am not sure where to get a good crank. We might have to start looking at buying billet cranks to keep our hobbies alive. |

Just took delivery of two complete rotating assemblies and was thinking of another. Guess I'll have to be happy I got my order in when I did. _________________ modok wrote:

I am debating with myself.
I have a very nice standard/standard 1500 non cross drilled core, do you guy's think it would be wise to send it to DPR as an investment for when the value of these cranks goes up????
I don't need it; I have a Berg GBF 86. I am thinking maybe a 82mm Porsche journal, maybe even a T4 C/M. What are your guy's thoughts.

Another shop bites the dust? terrible for many.
Glad I do not have that problem worrying about where to get parts- got my own.
I have said it before - get going on securing extra parts coz it will only get worse. But rest assured, someone will be picking up where he left off.
The skill-set did not die out, petesakes. Relax you all. Someone will come along and set up shop. |

Well we can hope.
But any shop that is setting up has growing pains and other issues..
With DPR you got a ton of experience, and a long time running that shop and those machines. Here in PA I have one crankshaft grinder that I can drive to and they are expensive enough that sending a crank to California and back was cheaper. _________________ modok wrote:

PA should be crawling w/ grinders - I have picked up machines there. LOTS!
Jose is not the only crank grinder around. There be plenty - even for VW stuff. Almost tempting to set up shop, doesn't it?
Maybe in a couple of years I will do it when I am retired. But -it will be in Nebraska. My Gleason crank welder and SV grinder are just lying in wait for my time to enjoy them.
Someone ought to setup shop on the east coast - |

Another Old Timer takin a rest...
well I think we're ok, theres enough of us here on the Samba each with tools, skills, parts, etc, that we can all keep ourselves going for a good while.
This hobby is coming to a point that if you want quality parts, we are going to all start having to provide for each other, maybe on per order or limited run basis; Can't expect a guy with a home shop to go full production.... |

He announced on Facebook he was retiring. He did not say he was closing shop. He said more details to come. Let's hope for the best. DPR is a profitable business so I'm sure somebody will step in and continue. With the machinery they could expand and do a lot more than just VW & Porsche. Let's all hope whoever takes over they put the same quality in their work. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK
