i love the look of the Steyr Baby. However, the beetle as a design has so many advantages. like a back seat with windows to look out of....
If i were to host a VW meeting, something i have not done in 30 years, i would totally let them in. _________________ regards

They had to decrease the wheel base.
Note, the Steyr also had a flat four engine, and also, they used this car as base for a military vehicle like the Kübelwagen, the Steyr 250 (1200 units)

And some still end up on a beetle chassis nowadays.

I always was a fan of the Steyr Baby as well - especially that red/black combo is looking so good.

Steyr Baby was already built several years before the Volkswagen. for Austrian scale, and considering the economical situation in the mid 1930s, it was a huge success. It was actually our beloved beetle, that killed the Baby. Well. rather politics, that only wanted 'ONE' Volkswagen, or KdF, to replace all the many other more or less successful compact cars in The Reich. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Did anyone notice the METAL sliding sunroof on this one? Not just a fabric "ragtop" like on the black/red one. A metal sliding sunroof was probably a very costly option on such a "(Austrian) people's car".

Looks like a German Hanomag Kommissbrot in the background, the brown car that has been retrofitted with twin headlamps on top of the fenders. The original design was only that single light in the lower center of the hood. |
