I’ve asked whenever I see one done well, and have heard anything from three Grand on up… at times, well up.
Those were mostly larger vans, but I’d suspect a Vanagon wouldn’t be that much less. And some compound curves seem impossible to get “perfect” without some scallop cuts that most wouldn’t notice on a commercial rig, or a race car, for two.
We had a wrap sponsorship lined up for our race car, but sold it. If we get another one, I’ll break out my DA sander, paint gun, and sign brushes and relive my twenties if only for that job.
We saw a van about a year ago that was literally roll-coated in a dull, sage color. It’s very non-Vanagon to a purist such as my past works, but he showed me how horrid it was before and it actually looked great for about $300. But here again, it took some skill to pull off.
I’ve seen others sprayed with some rocker panel paint, also to great effect compared to needing a $10K job.
But I pity anyone who’d ever want to return either method — or a wrap — to standard paint. And as Dj said, finding a future buyer who loved it would require an act of Luck.
I personally sure wouldn’t do it to anything less than a very-trashed finish, and/or needing lotsa bodywork easier to hide with stippled paint.
I’m also unconvinced that a wrap would be decent unless the body underneath was very, very straight and good… and if so, why do it unless it has commercial appeal for PR purposes? _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Is it really camo if you have VANAGON in big lettering on the side of the van? That's the civilian equivalent of armored vehicles boasting TANK or naval vessels labeled SHIP. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
