Hello everyone,
Second attempt to repair the side panel.
First the C-pillar reinstalled. I had the ones from BBT and Autocraft. A side panel from KF and Autocraft. Somehow nothing fits together properly without massive modification. All the tolerances add up. The Autocraft pillar was about 2-3 mm narrower. Depending on how you insert it, the position of the hinge mount naturally changes.
I installed the one from BBT, loosened the hinge mount in the pillar, attached the side part. Door inserted, opening for the hinge offset 5mm. I was very surprised. Has anyone done this before? Then put the hinge attachment in the right place and welded it back in.
I was unsure whether to weld or glue. I decided to weld and was quite nervous about it.
But I'm happy with the result. The connection to the corner still has the right amount of damage
There is an opening at the bottom of all the repair panels. Does it have to be like this?

Excellent work again. It is supposed to be welded together there.
What welding helmet do you use? |

@BarryL
The question is a good one. I normally use a very simple automatic welding helmet. But ! I was so stupid that I forgot to put it on out of sheer excitement and concentration so that the panel wouldn't warp again. In the evening, the right side of my face was burnt and my eye was red. So don't copy it. Protect yourselves _________________ my current challenge

All the panels in the engine compartment and the wheel arches are positioned and ready to be welded in.
The large Panel for the luggage floor has been fitted as a test. Looks quite good
Can someone give me a few details / photos.
A photo to see if the position is correct.
The rear has to be adjusted a little. Do I cut away something at the bottom so that the floor comes down (blue lines) or do I push the plate further inwards (red line)?

Next update
Some more sheet metal welded in.
Then I built a wild construction to keep the lower corners where they belong for the time being.
The next step is to reconnect the D-pillars to the frame. Then the crutches can finally be removed.

Further work on the rear.
Fitting and welding of the rear valance bracket
The Engine bay web bracket did not fit and had to be changed. First separate it as otherwise it cannot be welded in.
Extend one side and weld it in

Hello everyone
I've spent a lot of time in the engine bay over the last few days.
The plates for the battery tray and gas bottle tray needed a lot of work.
I either had to put something on them or cut them and put them back together again.
I saw them as practice pieces for tig welding. I still have a lot to learn and practise
Gas bottle tray
Battery tray
I formed a new edge. The shrinking makes it difficult to get it smooth.

They were a bit carelessly made. They deserved the punishment.
I had to make a few repair panels to keep the rear going. The rear arch closing panels and the bracket at the bottom of the D-pillar

Saw these at a coffee shop the other day. Made me think of your bus and its logos.

@WildIdea
Cool. I think the brand is unknown here in Europe
Further work.
A few adjustments are needed before the sheet metal for the luggage compartment can be fitted. Again, a lot of panels come together and have to be matched to each other. In, out, in, out, in, out
Before that, I also repaired the two side reinforcement pillars

Thank you very much.
As I enjoy reading the restoration stories of others here, it is a pleasure to share mine with you. The photos are always very helpful.
I wish everyone who is already riding a good season. It'll be a while yet for me.
@Sled,
give us some of your time and tell us the story. We all love rescue missions like this _________________ my current challenge

preparations for the rear area are underway
I also replaced the profile for the sealing lip, which was still OK on mine
This ensures that the seal fits properly
Some color.
Make something to fit
Other little things

Before I finish my rear compartment, I took care of the jack attachment.
A blind man bent it.
The angles are not right and the whole thing is not symmetrical and of different heights. You can get it in, but not as VW intended, lying flat everywhere and sitting straight.
A lot of work for 4 inconspicuous parts. Bending, cutting, assembling.

A few things were still missing from the frame.
The center section, the outriggers and the jacking points. Done!
