Hi Ray,

Regarding the "middle years" strut bushings, will these just go straight in without any modifications?

Also, regarding checking the centreing rings, can I simply put the car up on the hoist and check?

Do I need to support the bottom of the struts?

Cheers
Greg

What year is your car? Take a picture from the top of your strut bushings. If yours has the very early, non-ball bearing type, these will fit with just a small spacer change if anything.

Hi Ray,

I have checked both of the Track Control arms for the "ring" and they are missing on both sides (see the attached images).

What is the best way to make these?

I have just found your excellent post regarding these:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9384202

Just to confirm, the aim is to allow for the 20mm round radius arm to "slip" easily in the centering ring to provide for some minor movement? Also, do you know the size in mm of the outside diameter of the yet to be made new centering ring?

Also, my 411 is 1969 and I have added a photo.

Yes...your centering rings are shot....gone....check out this thread I just updated. Especially check out the very last two posts that give good alternate methods.

Yes, you have the very earliest struts. The bushings looks good from teh top. It will really depend on what they look like from below. Either way, when you swap them out...DO NOT get rid of the original bushings. I will check measurements tonight.

Thanks Ray!

Also, if the Track Control arms are moving up and down, won’t they be putting a lot of pressure on the centering rings and wouldn’t this cause the rings to break?

Hi Ray

I have managed to find a bush that is Acetal Resin (molded) that is the perfect dimensions to allow me to install to see if there is an improvement.

I've posted a picture.

I installed them into the left/right hand sides and went for a test drive and there was notable improvement and now there is only a very very slight shimmy.

I'm now in the process of having some Acetal bushes made from rod and will install them and take the car for another test drive.

I'll keep you posted.

Did you manage to find some time to check the specs of the top mounts?

Cheers
Greg
