Just installed a new generator on the Thing and on my test drive smelled what I thought was a brake sticking. When I got back to the house I traced the smell to the generator. Is that normal, like maybe a factory finish on the commutator burning off, or could it be too much tension on the fan belt? Checked the fan for interference before installing the belt, but will do that again when I have time. Thanks!

I got sooo tiered of the Generator/Regulator set up... Sorry to tell you... but if it smelled like barnish burning... more likely than not both your generator and regulator are toast...

I recomend you take the opportunity and upgrade to an alternator... internaly regulated.... It was probably the best upgrade I've ever done to my car.

Here is the video on how to do it... it is very easy.....

Feel free to follow my channel. Lots of repair videos.

I don't dispute that swapping to an alternator is the way to go, but I'm trying to get ready for the Christmas golf cart/UTV parade on the island and so want to get the Thing roadworthy Laughing Did some troubleshooting today and found that the problem was too much tension on the fan belt. adjusted that and away I went. Just bought the Thing for a 'project' car and am finding out that it's going to be a 'projects' car. Oh well, as long as it can make a weekly beer run, I'm OK!
