I am likely at the end of the road with my 1974 L Jet wagon. Few weeks ago the torque converter seal went and lost all transmission fluid (I immediately shut of the car after I got off the freeway, it was still running then and there still was some tranny fluid leaking out). The shop put in a new seal but unfortunately he still sees some transmission fluid coming out by a plate (not gushing), as he described, and the car no longer shifts past first gear. He will not work on it any further, I would have to have it towed to a transmission shop (can't even imagine what that would cost in 2023, 20 years ago when I bought this car from a seller here it was doable)
Ironically, after 20 years I finally had the car running great, smooth idle after air leak fixed, rewrapped dash, new heavy duty fuel lines and struts . But with the transmission issue I fear I am sunk. Any thoughts from the community about that. And simultaneously I am trying to sell it here, had a lot of questions about the transmission, my answer has been likely would need a new transmission or rebuild, as to the former, I am not even sure short of finding a used one, if that is even possible. Thanks all for your support over the years! Steve
p.s. is Shoptalkforums.com still active? seems I get more responses here |

The STF is still a great place.
You need a little more detail if you want an answer.
You say: "The shop put in a new seal but unfortunately he still sees some transmission fluid coming out by a plate (not gushing)"
What plate is this?
It still drives but will not shift higher than first.
Slow down.
First, there are several seals that must be replaced by 7 years or 70k miles.
Find out if you have red trans fluid ...ATF....mixing in the final drive gear oil.
If you are leaking anything at all and its a pressure circuit....you can likely get no shift.
If it was torn apart and ONLY the converter seal was replaced it was wasted money.
Tell us where its leaking. Ray |

All I can answer is it was pure ATF , there was not oil mixture. I will need to go to a transmission specialist, thanks Ray |

Please note what I said carefully.
See if you have red fluid....ATF.....MIXING....in the final drive gear oil. I did not say "leaking".
To do this, on level ground.....get a drain pan. Then FIRST remove the FILLER plug back on the final drive section. Its on the right hand side just forward of the CV joint. If with the car level, the fluid overflows through this hole and more than just a dribble comes out....it's highly probable that ATFA is leaking into the final drive section and mixing with the 90 weight hypoid gear oil.
Next, (especially if you have excessive fluid pouring out of the filler hole) pull the drain plug out of the differential section and drain the fluid.
When it's properly filled I think the final drive holds a little less than 2 quarts of 90 weight. Check the books on this for the volume. If you end up with 3 or more quarts, it has been leaking from the ATF section into the final drive. This will destroy the final drive so d9 n9t drive on it until you fix it.
Also....need to know. What "plate" is it still leaking from? Ray |
