How in the sam hill does one get the drivers seat on to the rails?!
I've tried sliding the seat on from the front, but the adjustment knobs/bolts hit the top of the track and bind the seat to the point where it won't slide back far enough. If I try from the rear, where the adjustment bolts don't hit anything, I cant get the rails to engage.
What the bus? |

x2 works for me. slide the seat all the way fwd so it is basically hitting the steering column before attempting to get it centered on the rails. I also look under the seat to confirm it is corrected seated on both rails. Then I lift and hold up the lever that allows the seat to move backwards and scootch my butt on to the seat. place feet firmly on floor and put my back into the backrest thereby getting the seat to slide backwards- works for me. Agreed that the seat mechanism is not VW's finest hour of engineering |

It is a pain in the butt, but it'll go on there. Make sure its ligned up (and pull the lever) and you will save yourself a lot of trouble. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

make sure the rails on the seat are not pinched closed on are clean also
I run a thick flat head screwdriver down the rails to open them then put a little bit of lube in them so it slides easier _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

Thanks for the replies, so it should be just that simple.
The issue I'm seeing is the adjustment knob on the right side of the seat is binding on the rail. Wondering is something is bent.
Are there any pix someone could share of their seat?
Thanks,
Fish |

The knob doesn't hit the rail but may be you mean the locking tabs that the knob connects to?
Up above you also said bolts - there are no bolts on the seat bottom.
I pasted in some photos below that should help.
To be sure we are working with the same parts, does your seat look like the seat shown below?

Can you post a photo of your seat? If it has a reond knob on the front to adjust the backrest it won't fit, it is for a bay. |

Maybe the hinge points of your seat lock is binding from dirt or rust and you have the handle all the way rotated where the cogs are blocking the track? |

Please don't laugh too hard, but try this:
Take out the passenger seat, climb in form the right side and try inserting the driver's seat with your right hand!
I am one of these extremely un-ambidextrous guys. I didn't stand a chance getting the seat lined up with my wimpy left hand. When I squeezed in and tried from the pass. side- piece of cake every time, every VW with seat tracks (and I have a lot). It's so much easier for me to pull up the lever as a righty and still wiggle the thing on the tracks. Naturally this assumes you're right handed... _________________

Made me laugh, but its true...I have the same problem. It's really hard to do this from the driver's side for me. Also, doing it from the passenger side allows me to hold the lever up while still being able to manipulate the seat, AND watch the latch area line up at the same time. Given how easy the passenger seat comes out, it's well worth the trouble. |
