The PO replaced our exhaust with a aftermarket tuned header and glass pack. We really want to keep more of the original look and return the pipes to the bumper instead of under it.
Does anyone have any experience with the kit from the thing shop?

Or any other ideas are welcome. Quieter is good, we are only running a stock 1600 motor.

See if these guys still can get the original stock style.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=235521

Nice price. $250 plus postage for the set. I got one and will install one day. Only thing it did not come with is the bolts and clamps.

The Danish made, original muffler on samba is the same one the German Motor Works sells for $400. The Danish stuff is very good quality.

BtW German Motor Works sells the complete installation hardware kit for that 73 Thing muffler for $15.

I called them about the install kit but the guy I spoke with said they only sell the kits with the mufflers, not separate. Kinda sound odd to me. Maybe I should call them back.

Kubel, have you been successful in buying the said kit from them or have part # info so when I call them back, I have a better chance getting it.

Thanks

I have not bought the installation kit from them. I found it on their web page. I am somewhat surprised that Greg was not willing to sell you the kits separately. Usually his wife Arda answers the phone and she ends up asking Greg questions. They have always been very good about helping me in any way they could. It is too bad if they will not sell the kit separately because judging from the picture on the web page it contains exactly the parts needed. If you have no luck with them, the next step is to contact CB performance. They sell a fairly complete line of high quality exhaust installation parts including copper gaskets, stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers, copper exhaust nuts and more.

The link to the kit at German Motor Works is

http://germanmotorworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=380

Mike Basso at Things Unlimited has the same system offered on his web page for $350. I bet he also has the installation kits.

Ditto what K-Mann said. It could be that you talked to neither Greg nor Arda. They have some new help there that might not be totally up to speed yet. I'd try calling again, and ask specifically for Arda.

Good luck.

http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D298%2D009%2DGER

This is a stock exhaust installation kit tha CIP1 sells for $9.

It sure looks like the German Motor Works kit is way better and contains all the parts needed like the tail pipe clamp. Good luck on the on line order. If that does not work I would follow the Cptn advise adn call back and ask specifically for Arda. She is very nice and always helpful.

thanks guys
How is the seperate exhausts for noise? The one in the pic I posted looked like a glorified glasspack. I have seen a exhaust like it with a muffler instead somewhere.

I have a performance exhaust with two separate mufflers, and it's plenty loud. You can't tell just by the way it looks, I'm afraid.

Hi Ted

Hows the noise level? That seems to be the setup we want.

It sounds like a stock ACVW.

There are two Thing exhausts for sale on eBay currently

The right side of a stock 73 set up currently for $1 at
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/vw-thing-muffler_W0...4497QQrdZ1

GMW is also selling a used header system that exits through the bumper currently listed at $75

By the way, thank you all for your replies.
Well the one from GMW is only a few miles away. If I won it I could pick it up. Kind of like mine as far as the tuned collecters, but then splits up to the 2 mufflers. A bit of ground clearance lost with it, how is it to adjust valves? Do you have to pull the mufflers off? Just wondering how close they get to the valve covers.

Well, it appears although their web page shows the kit available, they are not. Here is the email I got from them today when I checked on my online order. So, if anyone has the Thing specific clamps in question, used or new, I would like to buy them. I guess I need to check with Thing Shop and Things Unlimited also. These clamps, at least from the Thing Parts Manual and the German Parts web site I ordered them from, looking much different than the ones at CIP so I do not see or understand how the CIP kit would work for my stock exhaust. Maybe someone can enlighten me how it would work. The Thing version seem "keyed" so they match groves on the pips rather than generic clamps that do not, if that all makes sense.

Here is that email... tj

Hi Tom,
You called us before for the same install. kit , I am sorry to tell you that we don't have any more clamps for the tail pipes, but we have the rest of the kit, but the kit is not complete without the clamps. We've been trying to get the clamps for the last 3 months no luck yet we have 5 kits and it's for the mufflers we have. That's why the install. kits we don't sell separate.
Check with me in the future we might get them in .

A few years ago I ran the Thing shop's dual headers on my old Thing. 1641cc with dual AJ Sims kads, but it would be fine for a 1600. The performance and noise wasn't too bad, but adjusting the valves was a chore and a half. The jet coating was also crap, but this was optional. It looked stock until you got underneath, and I didn't have any qualms beyond the coating and the valve cover clearance. I'd say have some Harley headers made up like ol' man Bob Witte did. Sweeeeet...

Here are the proper Thing muffler clamps.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The generic ones from CIP look nothing like this so I am trying to come to grips on how to use something generic like CIPs to work for me. This is my 1st Exhaust repair so I need guidance. If generic will work, I will take your word for it and order and try them. The Things version just look so unique that it seems to me unless I find some used ones, I am SOL.

Thanks

That is one awesome picture of the installation kit.. I too had doubts about the clamps and also wondered if the standard VW tail pipe clamps would work. Here is what I would do if I were in your situation. I go to CB performance buy the copper gaskets and all the assorted stainless steel bolts, washers adn the copper nuts... Then I would buy a length of flat steel of the correct width and thickness (you can get these dimesions from GMW) and make your own clamps.. It would not take long to fabricate these. If you have no tools or skills for such, I would got to a muffler shop with the picture and have them make a pair. The other option is to crusie hardware stores and find one that will work... Another solution could be to flange the connection. I actually hate clamps on an exhaust system and never use them.. The Tri Mill offroad exhaust system has the pipe held on with springs to secure to a tapered fitting. I suspected that the header system I posted was the valve adjustment nightmare model but did not post that info because I have not dealt with that issue directly. I do not like tuck away exhaust because it violates some of my engineering background in that we try to move heat away from an engine not put in underneath it where the laws of physics will cause it to rise up and eat the engine alive...

If anyone here that updated to a non stock exhaust and has these clamps in question used and willing to sell, PM me with a price. I know a lot of people switched to a non stock exhaust so my hopes is someone here as a set they are willing to sell. I also have emails off to the major Thing vendors but figure I would ask here also.

Thanks
