I used to do this ^^^ kinda shit with a "come-A-long", until one day I heard cracking as if the roof wanted to cave in!
Got me real engine hoist right after that!

I use 4x4 to span 5 roof joists of manufactured roof trusses and as far as I can tell not even any deflections... Clue here is to span as many joists as possible to distribute load... Then there are some roofs that should not even be considered for this... You have to be a little smart about this...

This setup has worked fine for me. As the others mentioned I do have the weight distributed across multiple rafters. When I initially did the setup I had one eye screw screwed into the rafter (you can see the hole in the leftmost rafter). I was able to lift the engine but I was concerned with safety. If that eye screw popped out it would have a significant amount of force behind it to pop a hole in your head or the engine would fall on you.
I would not use the deer hoist/gambrel unless you have a number of friends helping or a car to tie it to in order to pull it up. If you have the friends you don't need to gambrel as it only takes two strong people to lift the engine. I've switched over to an electric hoist from Harbor Freight. I am very very happy with it.
I am going to use it to pull the body off the chassis on my 63. When I do that I will make a truss and other supports to hold the hoist up. Basically, I'll add two vertical beams along with cross beams to better support the center closest to the hoist. |

At the 4 minute mark for the OG version Build, and the 9 minute mark in the Mexican build you see that the VW Motor is simply lifted by one tab on the case with a hole in it.

See the tab with the hole, at the case parting line near the flywheel end.
The Factory lift Fixture lifts from that point.
But I'd like to get one of those 1000 lbs. Capacity Hydraulic Table Cart from Harbor Freight to help me get engines on & Off my Engine stand _________________ Good Luck

Now I know how to lift the body of my car with the hoist. I didn't realize the roof was string enough to hold it. |

A 350 pound engine is different then a 800-900 pound body... I would not....
Maybe with long enough 4X6 beam and a couple of vertical supports under it to take load and just use building structure to stabilize it...

That's the plan along with a truss or two. All of the weight will be on the legs. |
