They seem so basic. I wonder why it took so long? |

I don't know why that changed, but have wondered if there is a difference also in the frames of deluxe vs. std seats? (aside from the bottom not having the rail-slot). If you merely used a deluxe seat on a std floorpan, without the sliding rails, it would seem that it would be around 1.5" lower than a deluxe seat height.
I can't imagine that VW made two kinds of seat frames, but maybe.
I think at least one of the seats from my '51 is a std seat, I'll have to measure the frame height and compare it with my deluxe.
Anyone have any info on this??? _________________ John Henry

Recommendation: Weld them about 2 inches further back. You'll be waaaay more comfortable AND NO ONE WILL KNOW. (when was the last time you had them adjusted all the way forward?......................that's what I thought.) _________________ CH³NO²

I guess the measurements from the napoleonshat and the measurements from the centertunnel would be the ones that I need.
I have some kind of memory that the rails aren't perfectly parallell to the frametunnel?

I have short legs so I guess I dont gain anything by moving them ... _________________ ~Kris~

This thread is a few years old but I hope someone will be able to answer my query below please?
Which part of the rail are these measurements to please? Is it to the flange that welds to the floor or the rail itself: the top inner or outer of the lip or the bottom inner or outer of the big lip?
Cheers,
Dave |

Can anyone answer my question above please?
Doas anyone make a replacement rear strengthening bar for split bug seat backs please? One of mine is missing and the other is a little crusty:
How about the clips that hold the springs to the flat bar around the edges - sorry about the out of focus pictures but the clip in question is in the centre of the picture:
These are quite simple to make but even easier if someone already makes them
Cheers,
Dave |

Hello Dave - I don't know what standard you are doing these seats to, but bear in mind that if you are recovering the seats nicely afterwards, the last thing you want is for these simple metal strips you talk about, to open up, and require you to uncover the seats again to affect a repair.
I had this challenge last year with the '47 seats I was refurbishing. The spring tops were originally held to the metal wire that runs around the preimeter of the seat, with the sort of simple metal tabs you mention. A low tech, imperfect solution, fraught with failure possibilites.
I couldn't bear the thought of undoing the fabric again, and so instead of using these metal strips again, I used some elongated, wire wound metal springs, which I pulled out of an NOS Swedish 1960's bed (Built like a Rolls Royce) which served the same purpose there. Having fitted these to the seats, they wont come undone again, ever!
I've asked Mika to post a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about, which will make things clearer. I hope this helps. |

Dave, I bet you could harvest those pieces from any low back seat. Might be worth checking with one of your mates that has a later low back seat you could disassemble.
Just a thought...
Cheers! |

Thank you all for you replies and pictures. Martin, do you have any more of your nos Swedish bed springs? I am only missing a couple of those clips so I am guessing they are quite good at staying in place?
Mika, do you have a front seat bar to work from or should I remove mine and send it to you?
Does anyone have any further clarification in the location for the seat runners? |

I have an old seat where I can check the dimensions, and need to take as sheet metal laser cuts.
I also have those tiny clips you asked. They can be found on later seats too.
For the rails location, I'll try to take pics. _________________ Mika
