Still can't find a company that will insure a dune buggy in MD. Please help.

I insured mine as a beetle, I just told them it was a buggy and it was a convertable so i will only drive it in nice weather. So i got a lower rate. Just tell them it is a convertable now, dont mention it is a buggy.

They demand photos since it is a 67

DO NOT insure it as a Beetle. If you have a problem and they discover it is NOT a Beetle, you will be on your own. That is not what you need if you are at fault. I've had buggies insured with Grange Mutual Casualty Co. before with no problems. Pretty cheap too. They won't cover comp. or collision but the liability was only about $120 a year. You do have to have another vehicle with them.

Thanks, I'll give them a call. Since I have 7 cars to insure, maybe they will give me a deal. I have a Thing and 62 SC with historic plates, same for the 67 buggy. Also have a VW Golf, a prosche and a Saturn. I'm not sure how the Saturn got in there except when VW started suing aftermarket companies.

As far as I can tell Grange does not cover Maryland.

I called foremost and they said they only cover them for off-road use. What is the point in that? Is there something special I need to say?

You might want to check with Haggerty. I am also in Maryland (charles county, south of DC) So please let me know how this works out.
Thanks

I am insured through GMAC as a dune buggy. I know it's a bug, but on my card says dune buggy. If you can go through them, they seem to be really lenient..

I just got off the phone with the folks who are covering my buggy in NJ. I happened to remember this post so I asked them about MD for you, they will cover it under a modified vehicle policy for you.

The company is JC Taylor, you can call them at 800-345-8290 or check them out on the web at http://www.jctaylor.com/

What did you end up doiong for your windshield?
Did you just use plexiglass or were you able to find glass. I was going to buy that buggy last winter but I couldn't find glass. It's a frigging cool body. Nice clean lines.

Here's my reply from J.C. Taylor

Quote: Hi Louis,

Unfortunately, we could not insure the 64 VW since dune buggies are not eligible for our programs. We could, however, insure the 66 Plymouth for approximately $88/year. You can run a full quote and obtain an application packet for that vehicle at:

And from American Collectors who have had my collector cars for 25 years:

Quote: Thanks for the email. Based on the description of the vehicle, we would respectfully decline. The VW’s with fiberglass bodies are not vehicles that we have a market for.

Very Truly Yours,

In the Peoples Republick of Massachussetts a buggy remains a VW Beetle due to the chassis VIN# . That is what Herman the German my insurance agent told me. He is a German, still has the acccent. He loved my bug and was upset when I made a buggy out of it. So it remained a bug and I never have an issue with an inspection sticker. Ma. does have manufactured car regulations and the few buggies around here that went that route get a year of manufacture vin# from the RMV that screws them on emissions inspection. My understanding is that a buggy is just considered a rebodied bug and is not a manufactured car. Try to keep it as a bug but be honest with your insurance agent. Don't say anything to the RMV at all just let the insurance agent handle it. There is such a thing as giving to much information to government agencies in liberal states, thats when you realize just how oppressive so called liberal states are. To make myself clear
a) be honest with your ins agent they are the ones INSURING you and your buggy, The RMV only registers it
b) don't tell the RMV anything, either let your agent get the plates or do exactly as they tell you. Say as little as possible to the RMV.
c) make sure you have all the bells and whistles working correctly when you go for your inspection sticker and make sure that the VIN # on the tunnel is easily visible. You will probably have to point it out to the inspector.
Good luck.

Bill
