Hey guys...

Anyone tried to ship an engine? Type 1? Type 4? How much did they weigh?

I believe a fully dressed type IV engine is in the neighborhood of around 273 lbs. and a type I engine is around 30-40lbs. less. The transmissions are comparable topping the charts near 55-65 lbs.

I believe FedEx only ships ground items to 150 bs.

(I do accept engines/ transmissions as Christmas gifts, so ship them to me)...

I'm thinking about building a rear engine sportscar, just trying to find an engine/transmission combo thats cheap, and light.

Still havent found anything about the power this stuff will take though... :wink:

transmission in the neighborhood of 75 lbs. complete type 4 around 300lbs, 1600 around 25 lighter. these are loose numbers, give or take a few lbs.

The best way to ship something like that is on a pallet and via truck freight. Although the cost may be about the same as a tow dolly from
U-haul.

I shipped a complete 6-rib Bus tranny from Syracuse, NY to Ohio for about $40 vis UPS. I used your standard cardboard box and lined the bottom with a scrap piece of plywood. I used a heavy duty box, and it got there fine.

Long block:

A Type 4 long block weighs approx. 142 lbs.

Case - 55 lbs.
Crank - TBD
Camshaft - 3 lb. 12 oz.
Cylinder head - 17.5 lbs.
Piston + pin - 1 lb. 9 oz.
Cylinder - 6 lbs. 5 oz.
Rods - TBD
8 Lifters - 2 lb. 3 oz.
8 Push rod tubes - 1 lb. 6 oz.

Engine:

Fully dressed Type 4 weighs 309 lbs.

How does a long block compare to a Type 4 fully dressed? The long block weights about 167 lbs less. This makes quite a difference when you are moving the engine around from one place to another, trying to lift it onto an engine stand or calculate shipping costs.

Flywheel - 14.5 lbs.
Fan shroud + alternator - 24 lbs.
Muffler - 23 lbs.
Heat exchangers - 17-19 lbs.
Clutch - 2 lb. 3 oz.
Pressure Plate - 9 lbs.
Dual Solexes + manifolds - 15.5 lbs.
Engine tin - 20 lbs.
Distributor - 1 lb. 10 oz.
Engine support bar - 22 lbs.
Oil cooler - 2 lb. 2 oz.

Transmission:

002 transmission - 89 lbs.
Starter - 9.5 lbs.

almost a year ago i bought a complete bus engine on ebay. it had everything from the air box to the tailpipe. all fuel injection components intact. i paid about $300 for the motor and another $200 to ship it. the motor was coming from boston, ma to tucson, az. the bill of lading said the weight was 390 lbs. this included the pallet.

hope this helps you out.

i used yellow freight (the complany with the orange logo????) and had to pick it up at the terminal here with a friend's pick-up. took about a week.

I'm thinking a pallet is normally 40lbs... but I'm not positive on that 8)
