There are vintage bakelite knobs on there, I've seen them before. |

Hey, don't you know those things are illegal!
Believe it or not, Pep-Boys had a really sturdy 8-ball knob that has been in heavy industrial use on a fork-lift at my place of employment. Good luck! |

I think that some of the old school plastic ones are decent quality. I wanted one for a couple years. I finally found one on a splittie in a junk yard. it was just what I wanted, a suicide knob that actually was used on a bus. it says "ride on" someday I will install it onto a bus.
you might try looking at tractor supply stores, they probably have some heavy duty ones. |

eBay is where I've found all of mine. After a while you can tell which ones are old and which ones are the new repro crap.
You can search for suicide knob, necker knob, hollywood knob, spinner knob, steering wheel knob, brody knob, steering knob, etc.
Also, try to get a knob that is solid, not hollow. I had a hollow knob (Hollywood brand) crack in half on me while I was turning. Cut my hand and hit a curb. It could have been worse.
Alot of newer knobs will have two tension screws, these are usually poorly made and can't stand up to non-power assisted steering. Some other knobs don't use a tension strap, and instead use a clamp method of attachment. Both will gouge up your wheel but I opt for the strap knobs. If you don't want your wheel gouged up, don't get one.
I have used one for years now and I love it. Don't try to use the knob at a dead stand-still. Get even a little momentum going and spin that wheel and it will work fine.

Would cutting up a bike innertube and placing it between the steering knob and the steering wheel save the wheel from any wear? And because a bike tube is rubber, it wouldn't let it slip. |

careful though, don't tighten it down to far. I tightened one down and it took a big chunk out of my wheel. I've since restored the wheel and am not putting on another. |

Do as you wish to protect the wheel, but a loose or squishy spinner knob will drive you nuts and will eventually loosen up. Tighten that knob down so there is zero movement in the mounting. good luck. |

Those are the "cheap" kind, weak rivet holds it together, and it is mounted on the wrong side! They are supposed to be on the inside of the wheel. :?
I had one of those on my '55 F100. It did bite a chunk of the wheel, kept getting loose, had to "bang" on the rivet every so often, and as mentioned above, it's not supposed to be "power steering"! :( You have to have some "rolling" to make it work without coming apart. Only "plus" was that I opened it up and put a picture of my truck instead of the cheesy one that came with it. :P
Good luck anyway! 8) |

I totally agree with you on this. Have you driven with one? If you're used to driving the normal way by crossing hand over hand to make a turn then that damn nob just gets in the way. Too bad you didn't post 1 year ago as I sold mine at OCTO. |

After about a year of smashing my wrist with the damn thing I took it off and sold it at a show! |
