View original topic: LED Light Bulb for 1154, 6 Volt duel filament type
zerotofifty Fri Mar 29, 2024 6:10 pm

I friend of mine is looking to install new tail light bulbs in his 1961 Bug, which is still 6 volts. The bulb should be an 1154 type, dual filament.

We want to try LED upgrade,

Where does one find a good super bright LED dual filament preferable RED led bulb that will fit in the stock 1961 snowflake tail lamp house?

We are on a budget that kind of prevents us from buying the near $100 full lense replacement types offered for these tail lamp houses. Rather we want an LED bulb to fit in the existing 1154 stock socket.

What are a good bright brand?

thanks

I got mine here. Very pleased with them.

I searched that website for the 1154 bulb and it found none. They have dual filament types but they are all for 12 volt system (12 volts are 1157s) (down to as low as 9 volts) But nothing in 6 volts which is the 1154

Do you have a link to their 6 volt dual filament bulb, or maybe you bought a 12 volt type?

Thanks

Mine are 6V. It's been several years since I bought them.

Will these work?

These work in my '63. Be sure all contacts and connectors are thoroughly cleaned ... especially the grounds. LEDLight likes to tell you that you need load equalizers to get them to work, but I got mine working without using them thanks to help from others on The Samba.

You might want to consider adding an LED third brake light in the rear window. I bought one from BrakeLighter for my '69 and will be adding one to my '63. Here's the link to the one they make for 6v, negative ground vehicles:

Gonna resurrect this old thread rather than start a new one, as this thread seems to be the most recent of the LED lights posts.

I have a 64 Beetle, still 6V. I would like to replace the front signals, rear signals, and taillight/brake light bulbs with LED.

I had bought LEDs previously but they never worked correctly and I quickly dismissed them as being incompatible with my 6V car.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what you bought, and what you needed to do? Are load equalizers necessary, do I need something special for the turn signals? I am hoping to do as little modification to the wiring as possible. So the more plug and play, the better!

Remove the stock 6v flasher and replace it with this one. Instructions on how to connect it come with the flasher.

Use the 6v LED that cross references to the OEM bulb number. No load equalizers are needed, the new flasher is compatible with the LEDs.

Brake/tail lights do not need load equalizers. Just install, BUT FIRST, clean/scrape all contact points in the sockets thoroughly and especially the ground contacts. Also, be sure to check and thoroughly clean the wire connectors in the trunk and at the brake switch on the master cylinder. If you have a twitchy brake switch, you might want to consider installing a pedal switch. With a pedal switch the brake lights come on the moment there is forward movement on the pedal, which is long before they come on with the master cylinder switch. You can get a kit for a pedal switch here:

https://www.aircooledevolution.com/product-page/pedal-activated-brake-light-switch

If you do decide to install a pedal switch in a 6v car, you'd want to wire it up with a relay which is not included in the kit, but they are fairly easy to find.

Here are all the 6v products LEDLight sells. Click on the LED bulb image to see a cross reference list so you are sure to order the correct bulb.

Note: Order red LEDs for the brake/tail lights, not white. White will wash it out so it looks orange. The red LEDs are very bright even behind the red lens.

You can also use LEDs for the front parking lights and wire them to serve as daytime running lights ... they're that bright.

Here are the LED parking lights on my '63:
