Accelerator throttle cable ferrule crimp swage parts fuel system
My accelerator cable is too long. I have purchased different lengths and they are all too long. I'd like to make my own throttle cable up to the length I need. I know I can buy the kind with the end that attaches with a set screw. What I'm after is finding the ferrule and tool that crimps or swages the carburetor end on as you would find on a pre-made cable.
The problem is, I can't find that end anywhere! Maybe I don't know what it's called?
This end is 4mm OD and 38 mm long.
Does anyone know where I can find these? |

You aren't going to find that part because that is not swaged on it is 'brazed' for lack of better term, or melted/formed onto to end of the cable. |

Tool marks on that end piece suggest that the cable was inserted into a hole, then locked in place by swaging.
And no, you're not likely to find that end piece available as a separate item. A machine shop can make one fairly easily from a piece of steel rod, and probably attach it to the cable too. Won't be cheap though...
If you have access to a drill press or a lathe, you can probably make one yourself. |

EMPI sells adjustable cables with a terminus that is held on with a small Allen head screw. It’s a woven cable which is better than the solid wire pieces. |

The problem with the empi type is that you have to remove the end to do any work that involves removing the engine or the shroud and then the cable frays.
Also, I don't really trust that end to hold up.
Having said that, I guess I can just order a few of the Empi type to keep on hand so I'm not waiting on new cables. |

I can certainly fabricate an end and swage it on a cable and give it a try. |

I haven't done it but you could try soldering the end.
This is what they supposedly do for bike/motorcycle cables so they don't get messed up before installation.
The cut you do needs to be CLEAN to do this.
Shitty wire cutters will cause it to fray. |

You're right - soldering is a good idea. I'll give that a try. I also found some SS 1/8" pipe at the hardware store. I have a hydraulic swage tool so I'll give that a try too. |

Just to be clear, I think EverettB was talking about soldering just the cut end of the woven cable to keep it from unraveling, not soldering the woven cable into the solid end piece. I wouldn't trust solder alone to hold that together. |

Yes, I was talking about just the end.
It may still get messed up where the aftermarket end clamps down on the wire but it should help with any unraveling. |

Just get a piece of brass tubing from Ace that just fits over the cable slide it over the cable and insert it into carb. clamp and tighten the screw clamp (that alone will be e`nuff to hold the cable), cut off the excess cable leaving 1/4" sticking out and solder the end (to keep it from unraveling) and leave an extra blob of solder so it won't fit back through the tubing, the carb doesn't need that much strain to operate it |
