I ran a Carfax Report on my 1984 Vanagon Caravelle GL to see if I could determine where it was manufactured. The first record only states "Source:NICB and Comment: Vehicle manufactured and shipped to original dealer." Not sure why NICB is listed as the source. I'm pretty sure the car was imported from Europe.

For America there should be a tag on the van, listing if it is Federal or California specification if made for those markets. If the tag is present, then you will know, if missing, well maybe it was removed, or maybe it is for another market.
The VIN code may also be a good clue, sometimes the code has the market info in it, I dont know if that is the case or not with the vanagon however. Smarter folks here might know however.

Where is you at?

If its a North American VIN number look at the last letter before the final number string. Most were made in Hanover Germany which is identified with an H.

"The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) is a North American non-profit membership organization located in Des Plaines, Illinois. It was created by the insurance industry to address insurance-related crime and works closely with law enforcement agencies. Much of NICB's focus is on motor vehicle theft.

The first listing is like a Certificate of Origin."
