I need to buy a spare coil just to have it in my kit, so looked on WW this morning and they are selling a German made Beru brand instead of the old Bosch units - anybody have experience with Beru or should I hunt down the tried an true Bosch?

Very is a good manufacturer. Flamethrower coils are also really good!

It is very difficult for purist and die hard VW people to understand, Pertronix Flamethrower coils are better than both those brands. If you like chrome then get the chrome.

Both are probably made in the same factory.

Pretty sure the Beru coil says “Beru Germany.” That’s different then “Made in Germany.” If it was made in Germany. Hit the “Buy now button” if it’s NOS.

I’ve run a Beru coil made in Mexico for years in a bus. My buddy owns that bus now and the coil is still running tough.

I have a 1974 OEM coil that was on the 74 bug I bought 5 years ago. Still going strong.

I run Bosch Blue coils from Brazil that are resin/epoxy filled for many years plus. Still great.

I have many many friends with Flame Thrower coils. I’ve never heard any one of them bitch about their coils.

YMMV.

I don't know of anything Beru that is made in Germany. Bosch is not made in Germany either. The newest Bosch coils are not available until around December are made in Brazil. Bosch is the epoxy super blue coils.

Beru is oil filled made in Mexico. You will see no country of origin on the Beru coil.

If you need a spare coil Beru is great. It's very economically priced at less than $20 usually.

Here are pictures of the two:

$21 shipped on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/114757308977

Cost on these is around $10. Bosch coils are 4 times that.

Google search shows $20 to $30. https://www.google.com/search?q=beru+12v+coil&oq=beru+12v+coil

Here's another one. I think it is a Beru in disguise but I can not confirm that. You get the VW logo on your coil for a few more dollars. Also Mexico made.

Most likely, I doubt there are many factories that are manufacturing old ignition coils these days.

Cars don't have coils any more ;)

I'm still running the Bosch blue coil I purchased in 1976 !!!!

When did you install it on the car?

1976 !!! On my 1835cc engine. And the blue coil on my 1600cc engine is not much younger !

When I bought my '74 Super Beerle, it had a Bosch Blue epoxy-filled coil. I kept that car with the same coil until a few months ago and never needed the NOS Bosch that I had purchased (for just in case).

I sold the NOS Bosch a few weeks ago, so, no need to ask.

look at the photo- whats wrong with this picture? this happens to me all the time, i purchase a beetle part and IT Does NOt Fit!!

heimlich Fri Nov 25, 2022 5:05 pm

That looks correct. It's the same one that I sell. They do not come with a bracket so there is that. They should come with the attachments for connecting the wires.

What is the problem with yours?

Wendle Willkie Sat Nov 26, 2022 7:01 am

the diameter of the coil is too small- when the clamp is tightened the holes are too short to fit on the shroud, the photo shows the difference- i cant be the only one who's encountered this problem

heimlich Sat Nov 26, 2022 7:29 am

I just checked a Bosch and Beru coil on the shelf. They are both approximately 55MM in diameter.

You most likely have a bracket from an earlier coil. They can be larger. I measured one on the shelf and it is 60MM.

news flash- found a different bracket that holds the beru coil firmly-

I had a new pertronix flame thrower coil go bad w/in 6 months, back in 2012. And a pertronix SVDA vaccum can, and a pertronix ignition module. The computronix module in my '73 Super has over 23k miles on it as does the Bosch blue xoli. I used to say id never buy another pertronix product but computronix is now owned by pertronix.

Get a Flame Thrower and be done with it -- you get what you pay for and they are the best, for sure. Car runs so much better with a new FT coil!
