Can't wait! I'll be there this year with my '83 Vanagon Diesel this year. It'll have a for sale sign in the window

I’m not sure about you guys, but I am getting STUPID excited for camping in Salem. This is my 19th consecutive year staying at Winter Island and I’m getting pumped!

I’m leaving Long Island early on Thursday the 6th, and will meet up with Brooke along the way. Manny and Erika will be along Friday, a another friend and Salem noob, Bert will be up Friday as well with his 68.

I’m planning to be in town for the kick-off parade on Thursday evening.
Friday and Saturday will just be spent around the campground and exploring Salem. I’d like to do a trip into town one evening for dinner and maybe drinks over at BitBar. I don’t think we’re heading into Boston this year.

Sunday (I’m assuming) we’ll hold our annual caravan into Brookline.
As with years past, we’ll leave at 8 am.
The route we’ll take will be posted shortly, the same as with every year.

I need to repeat - every single year - someone in the middle of the line decides they want to take a different route and predictably takes half of our “caravan” with them and then people get lost and upset with me. If you are riding in the caravan please stick to the route with the group. If you want to take a different route please feel free, but do not exit the campground with the rest of us.
I do suggest bringing a FRS/GMRS radio and knowing how to use it.

obnoxiousblue Sat Oct 01, 2022 6:07 pm

Nope. Not me. But I think that guys name is Mike as well!
I was there last year with my 64 Bug. This year I’ll have the Eurovan camper with me.

see you next weekend

fez68,

I have you on the list for camping. I think that was Jesse Millan that needed a pushrod. He should be there again this year.

Obnoxiousblue,

I have your entrage on the camping list. We have a number of New York campers this year. Thanks for leading the Sunday caravan again.

I will be at camp Salem on Thursday. I plan to have firewood delivered again. The weather looks good, but we are expecting a cold front coming in on Friday. Be prepared for cold nighttime camping, and plenty of cool air for your VW.

Here is our route to Brookline from Salem. I typically move my van into position around 7:45 and we roll out at 8. Some tips based on years past:

1) Know the night before if you plan to participate!
Be up, packed, and ready to roll!
2) If you are joining the caravan, be committed to the route. Don’t detour mid way, especially if there are people behind you!
3) If you have a FRS, GMRS, or Amateur radio - bring it! It’s nice to have eyes and ears in the middle of the pack!
4) Have this post, with these directions open on your phone, your copilot should help you navigate!
5)Have your camera mounted and rolling, it’s awesome to get a long line of VWs rolling together and we get lots of attention on the way!

I will have printed copies of these directions with me to distribute the morning of the caravan.
If you feel you want a copy sooner, here is a link to download and print it yourselves.

I think his name might have been Jesse…can’t remember for sure, but super nice guy. Hope he’s there and brings that propane fire pit again.
EDIT. Saw Stan’s post. It was Jesse.
