Hey!
We have a very well established Pittsburgh Vanagon Club and would be very helpful if you have any mechanical travesties while in our region.

There are no scheduled campouts for August, and I don't know of any particular places with hookups and amenities that stand out in my mind- but you'll probably find what you're looking for at Cooper's Lake Campground, Slippery Rock Campground, Bear Run Campground, or Raccoon Creek State Park. Moraine State park has bathrooms, but I don't think they have showers.

Most of us do primitive camping around here.
Anyways- welcome to our region, let me know if you need any help while passing through! We have a great team of knowledgeable vanagon enthusiasts and a supply of parts and tools.

FWIW Cooper's Lake CG no longer allows single campers. It is for events only now.

there is nothing near Pittsburgh, but if you want to camp for free in the forest in PA, this site is your new best friend. no amenities, just a place to be loud and enjoy nature.

One of the most well known examples of Frank Lloyd Wright's modern architecture can be found just outside of Pittsburgh - Fallingwater

I would highly recommend that you make a reservation and find time to visit and take the tour of this gem of American architecture.

Can confirm, this interactive website is the bees knees. Even though there are no facilities, most campsites still have a fire ring and picnic table.

I can't think of any campgrounds I've ever seen with full accommodations within 40 minutes of the city- it just sorta isn't a thing. The city extends and fades into the suburbs, and the only chance of a place like that is going to be outside that radius.

If you wanted a primitive spot (no bathroom, hookups, showers, etc) and wanted to hang with some van folks, I bet we can help make that happen.

Less well known but still worth a look is his Kentuck Knob built across town (Ohiopyle), uphill and 30 years later. Entirely different works. There's a state park near the Knob that does not permit dogs, the reason we did not camp there during our visit.
