Hi team,
I am on the hunt for a QUIET replacement exhaust tips that don't have the stock peashooter whistle. I know it is sacrilege to say this but something about that little chirp just hits me ear the wrong way and makes me bonkers.
I currently have a pair of the straight exhaust tips (no baffling) but they're pretty loud. https://www.jbugs.com/product/3694.html
Was considering the following but don't know if they're actually quiet or not.
- Option 1: https://www.jbugs.com/product/16-9535.html?rrec=true
- Option 2: https://vwparts.aircooled.net/Chrome-Tapered-Tail-Pipes-T1-Pair-p/tapered-tail-pipes.htm
Any guidance on those (or any other suggestions) is greatly appreciated.
Finally, thank you all for your help throughout the years here. My little bug is running well and it's all thanks to this forum's guidance. Cheers! |

Many years ago, I had a set of tapered tips on my 71 Ghia. Nice sound, will be louder than stock but quieter than unbaffled. |

What brand of peashooter tips are you running that Fweems to loud? Is your engine and exhaust to stock specifications? My crappy $8 No name brand tips have a little fweem sound but a nice throaty note overall.
See if something in here answers your questions.

I found that some peashooters whistle and others don’t. In my case one set does and the other doesn’t. The one that does has vibrations on the inner perforated cylinder. If I put pressure on that the chirping stops. |

I currently run a set of the tapered tail pipes on my bug and they sound just like stock without the whistle to me, not loud at all. Of course I've had them on for many years so may have just gotten used to it being slightly louder but they certainly aren't much louder than stock. I could post a video when I get home if you'd like although they are so similar to stock I'm not sure much difference could be heard. |

Buy straight baffle stainless tips, look stock, no annoying fweem! |

Didn't the stack penetration into the muffler contribute to that sound?
I believe over the years VW recommended different stack penetration depths. (for different designed mufflers ?)
I have a '69 and '70. I mark off 2" with a Sharpie on the muffler end of the stack and use that as my penetration depth.
I don't have that sound. I'm also using cheap steel stacks. |

I've used your option #2, they are NOT quiet.....but they aren't real annoying
either. People will know you are there. |

Not in my experience. I experimented with my non fweeming tip in various positions and no dice. The other pair freemasonry in any position. |

Take your loud tips to a motorcycle shop and buy some baffle's that fit them. |

Just saw this. I'm on record here for having the same sentiment (Just Say No To Fweem). At one point I found some NOS German (ERNST) brand tailpipes for my 62 and they were whistle free for many thousands of miles. And as others have said, I've run taper tips. (but those short taper tips on a system that is meant to have long pipes ended up "baking" the aftermarket rear bumper that I was running on the car at that time.) |

Used these back in the day - stainless steel, nice discreet sound, no fweem.
I have no idea if the vendors below ship overseas..

The straight ones w/no baffle are really loud. I've used both of your options previously. IIRCC the angle-cut ones were actually pretty quiet. They had a fweem at first that went away after a couple of weeks. I used them until I lost one of them on Spout Run out here because the fit, like much aftermarket stuff, is so-so and the clamps don't always grab fully. So I always drill a whole and add a screw thru them directly into the muffler sleve. But that's besides the point.

I have a pair of similar pipes- tapered stainless w/ baffles from CIP1. They are not installed yet pending evaluation of stock muffler condition.
I am considering options in case I do need a new muffler.
