Trying to connect a newly purchased AC line to a newly purchased condenser in my 1993 Volvo 940. I expected new fittings to be threaded or at least use the slide/spring fitting. Instead I got male and female sleeves with no observable way to secure to each other. I'm guessing I'm missing something simple, but after a few hours of web searching, I came up empty. Anyone out there know how this fitting works? This picture shows the male sleeve. The condenser (not pictured) has the female sleeve. They fit together like a glove, but I see no way to secure the fitting.

Pretty sure you're missing a clip. They look like this.

Looks like it uses a bolt-on line retainer. See the lower right picture at the following link: http://forum.vccn.no/showthread.php?280-ChrML-s-Wo...#post66714

Thank you, I think you are on to something. Here, now, is a picture of the new condenser with the two female sleeves and what looks to be a a threaded hole for a bolt. Now I'm off to try to find that "bolt-on line retainer".

There's supposed to be a block that has two cut outs in it that slip over the lines before they are slipped into the condensor & then that block is secured with that one bolt.

So far that block does not exist on the web. Still searching. Meanwhile, still no replies over on the Volvo forum. You guys are awesome.

Like this (this is one on a Jetta expansion valve).

Ugh - that block appears to be unique to Volvo and is out of stock everywhere except one place in Russia where it is available for 742 rubles ($10.65). Anyone ever order anything online from Russia?

Just a wife. No return policy.

I'd look for one at a wrecking yard or figure out how to make one before I'd order something from Russia. A simple bracket made from 1/8"-1/4" steel should be plenty sufficient to hold the lines in place.

Tom K. Mon Jun 15, 2020 4:35 pm

Manufacturing something out of steel might be the best option. The original factory condenser had male threads. Only the aftermarket lines and condensers used this out-of-stock retaining block. I would have to get very lucky at a junk yard. Or maybe I could return all of what I have and instead look for the original factory stuff with threaded fittings from a junk yard.

Here is what the retaining block looks like - maybe not too hard to make:

Bore two appropriately sized and spaced holes in a block of metal and hacksaw out one side of each so it'll slip over the pipes, don't forget the hole in the middle for the bolt.

Tom, try Erie VoVo in Utica NY

Are you on Matthews Volvo site or brick or Swede speed

Mvs is great for P80s and P2s, we do have 940 guys too

looks like you got the last generation (most updated) line and condenser which carried over in the 960-S90/V90

as I recall, there were a few other things required for the update. does your car have all 3 pressure switches? I seem to recall some only had 2 and you'll either need a cap or another switch.

a plastic cap won't work here...the pressure is too high in the condenser for just a cheesy plastic cap.

you can use a plastic cap IF the condenser you have has schrader valves for the switches.

also be aware your pressure switches may not fit the condenser. i'd really have to dig for the info. I may have purged all of the Tech-Net notes...I have kicked every RWD volvo to the curb at this point as well as many P80's.

is this the goofy condenser missing the chunk out of the corner?

Erie volvo will most likely laugh at you, they don't really have any old shit around anymore, but worth a try.

call v&s 1-800-700-8658 ask for Kenny. he may laugh you out as well, but they seem to have some older shit still lingering around

Volvo part 6841206

No longer available, but it wouldn’t be awful to machine that out of a flat piece of aluminum, cut rectangle, drill clearance hole for bolt, drill two clearance holes for the flanges, then open them to allow installation

Tom K. Tue Jun 16, 2020 12:03 pm

Yes I plan to make it - I don't have a drill press only a steady hand and plenty of extra metal to make it over and over again until it fits. My other AC line still has the old female threads at the end, so I also need to find that line with the non threaded male sleeve (haven't seen any simple adapters). Thanks for the tip, Skills, I'll search under the 960-S90/V90 models. My existing system has the three switches that I already checked for fit.

You guys are all awesome.

Let us know how this goes. The O-rings make the seal, the retainer you need or make is just to hold this in.
