I am getting a 74 standard beetle with the 1600cc engine, is it possible to make at least 100 HP out of it without machining the engine? |

Turbo....
You would need a 1915 to get 100hp naturally aspirated. |

Wait....at the motor or at the wheels? You don’t need a 1915 to make 100hp. |

Turbo...close thread.
This doesn't need to be a pissing contest about who can build the smallest displacement motor to get 100hp. OP asked how to get 100hp out of a 1600cc without machining it.

I think the simple answer is no. The expensive answer might be yes, but are you ready to spend that amount? Might be cheaper to machine the engine... |

100hp with strictly bolt on parts? No, JPM mode almost 200hp with a 1600 at 9200rpm, but its $$$$$$$$ and a lot of machining.build a 1914 with decent heads, easy peasy 100hp.

Lots of compression helps. But, then your machining the heads. |

You cannot make 100HP without machining the case and the heads, adding a cam and some carbs.......
so......turbo. |

Should be easy to get a stock engine to 100 hp. It just needs to be an engine in good condition And a turbo. I’d bet you could get 100 with stock 34pict3 and DVDa distributor. I wouldn’t put a turbo on an old worn out engine though. |

Yes you sure can get 100 HP out of a 1600 without machining the case and using all off the shelf parts.
New heads, big cam, dual carbs, header, and raise the CR |

Spend a bit over 10K Aussie dollars with a friend on mine , (Volksengineering) he builds 1600 formula Vee engines . 80 WHP with stock heads , stock manifold and carb . They have a regulation cam and a set compression ratio so you would still have to get the heads machined . :D
Or a cheaper way .as Dave mentioned
All depends if you want 100 flywheel or 100 at the wheels ?
For 100 flywheel , a 1640 with a good cam and compression to match , stock valve heads that are flowed and not hogged out with at least a 3 angle valve cut .matched to the right exhaust and a pair of 40MM dells or IDFs that have the correct venturis etc . Should make 100hp. |

I put a cheap draw through turbo together and put it on an old worn out engine. Worked out just fine. Ran 12 psi or so and had no troubles. Well I shouldn't say no troubles. After about 11 years the drain Hose got soft and started to kink and I didn't know it. That gave me a little trouble. |

All engines made by machining.
I think what you mean is you want somebody else to do it for you, and that's fine. Used parts and used engines are always better deal than new. |

This question is kind of open to interpretation. What do you mean?
Are you trying to make 100 hp with your stock parts?
Can you buy machined parts and bolt them onto your engine?
By no machining, do you also mean no case reconditioning?
All engines need some machining.
A 1600 can be built to make 100 hp and still be drivable. Alstrup has one in the Engine Combos sticky in this high performance section. |

That's weird^^. Max engine speed of 6000 rpm, but max HP at 8000 rpm? |

Thanks for all the replies! Haven't been getting any notifications on replies so I'm just now seeing them. To answer some of the questions, I was wondering if its possible to achieve 100 at the crank without having to split the case, and without a turbo. I've been out of the VW game for roughly a decade now, and when I was in the game I didn't have the automotive knowledge I do now. That being said, the flat 4 is still a bit of a mystery to me when it comes to how to get power out of it. If it's not possible without a ton of money and lots of special parts that could possibly effect reliability of longevity, my next step would be to turn to boost. Bottom line, I was just wondering if it is possible within reason for a guy ordering parts online and not knowing of a local machine shop with the proper know how to machine a VW case. |

Must be the non CW crank. She'll make power to 8k but only temporarily maybe. |
