I was told that a magic eraser was used by the previous owner on the exterior paint of my newly acquired 73 squareback to remove built gunk, fingerprints, etc on the driver side door panel. The area where the magic eraser was used doesn't appear to differentiate too much from the rest of the car.
It's not the original paint and the finish on the paint on the rest of the car is kind of satin, not much shine to it at all.
Just wondering if I need to be weary about any future problems with the magic erasered parts? |

| Magic eraser is an abrasive. That is not the correct tool to be using on automotive paint. Paint needs to be decontaminated (clay bar or towel/iron spray), polished, and protected (wax/sealant/coating) on a regular basis. Go over to Autogeek.net if you want to learn about the process. |

I have seen people use all sorts of things to get off road grime, bird dooty etc. The thing is a micro fiber towel and some car wash soap will get most of the gunk off. Sometimes you need something a little stronger to get road tar, tree sap, gum off of the paint like Goo gone or something equivalent then wash with soap and water.
The magic eraser will probably just dull your paint as it is scratching the finish. A finely scratched finish will appear dull and you may need some light rubbing compound to shine it back up. |
