View original topic: Installing fans for Norcold refrigerator; 12V source question

I would like to install a pair of dual fans which would attached to the fins of the Norcold refrigerator but I am at loss where to connect to a 12v Source. I have a 1995 camper.

One option would be connect to any 12v source with the fan then controlled by the fan switch when needed. The downside would be that the fan would be connected to a "hot" wire" so I would always have to be conscience that the fan is always on unless I turn it off. I'm assuming it would be wired to the shore battery and the fans do not use much power. Not ideal but it appears to be simple. See picture. If I go down this route, which 12V power source on the refrigerator would work best? My electrical knowledge is very limited so any full explanation would be appreciated (color wire, etc.). I did track a manual which will help me.

A second option would be to connect in such a way that the fan only goes on when I use the refrigerator in any of the 3 modes (gas, electric, battery). Would it be possible to wire this way? If so, I am not sure where to connect. Obviously this option would be the best option but it may not be possible or too complicated for me with my limited knowledge.

In advance, thank you

To further complicate it, I noticed the refrigerator has no drain hole like most RV refrigerators so it is going to be a challenge to make a hole to run the fan wiring out.

Has anyone done this? Suggestions?

Attached is a link of what I am attempting to do (my fan unit only has 2 fans, not the larger 3 fan model but it's the same fan company).

Hope this helps!

You have to manually turn on your fridge when you are using it. I would add a fan switch to the panel above the fridge. Turn on fridge, also turn on fan. Fridge off, fan off. Wires are small, just drill a small hole to run them through, fill with silicone to keep cold in. Fridge is pretty small, are the fans going to take up too much room?

Fan is rather small and clips directly onto fins.

My refrigerator actually works quite well on AC. Almost too good. After being plugged in all night, I register a temperature of -4.6 C. Now running on DC is another matter so I thought this fan might help.

I bought my van last year and this fan came with it along with some other extra parts. Otherwise, I would not have thought of installing it.

Right now trying to get the propane option up and running. Pulled out refrigerator over the weekend. Given the 3 switches (AC/DC/propane), not as easy to wire fan into each separate switch (especially my limited knowledge). So I might simply just tap into the adjacent power plug/cigarette lighter. It's always "hot" so my fan will always run but (i) it draws very little power, and (ii) the fan itself has a on/off switch
