I just got home with a project Baja. I've built Bugs, Buggies and Sandrails but never really ventured into medium travel suspension.
The original owner installed a 6" wider beam with 1 1/2" Longer x 3/4" wider front arms and 3"x3" rear arms all setup for coil overs.
Can anyone tell me what kind of travel the car should have.
I also need spindles with a 3" lift and link pins, stockers are too short to fit though the arms. I'm open to any tip tricks or ideas you have.
Thanks,
Jerry... |

HD link pins have a threaded end for a self locking nut. Should be long enough for the arms.
+1.5 front arms should get about 11-12" of travel.
3x3 arms...Travel depends on a LOT of factors.
- which model trans
- how the trans is set in the chassis
- micro stub, mid-board, out-board or VW hubs
- which CVs are used
- proper setup, prep and installation of CVs
- depth of cup of inner and outer CV flanges
- how many degrees you choose to allow the CVs
- shocks and upper and lower mounts come after all else and should be sized and mounted to work with cycling of suspension. They should not determine suspension setup.
A typical 3x3 setup using VW hubs should be capable of around 15" of travel. Although I encounter many who tell me they get 12". But many 1600 buggy and 5/1600 racers claim 16-17" of travel with +1 arms with micro stubs on an 091 trans.

I know they make 7/8 diameter link pins but they are the same length as stock I belive. Never heard of longer link pins. |

"7/8" link pins are actually 22mm linkpin bus size. The so-called 5/8" Bug link pins are really 18mm.
And aftermarket heavy duty 18mm link pins have been available for over 40 years. My Hi Jumper has them still. Those pins are a little longer than stock. They are still available.
But there may be something funny about your arms that they require longer link pins. |

But do they make longer pins since theres the notch for the pinch bolt? |

I've never encountered "longer" link pins. That's why I said there may something funny about your arms.
+1.5" is an unusual size for arms anyway.
+2.5 is more common. |

The arms are from "Sandparts.com and I haven't been able to contact them.
Stock link pins stick out of the arm about an 1/8" with all the shims removed.
Is there anywhere online that I can go to get a bit more insight on properly setting up and building the suspension.
Northern Illinois is not necessarily a hotbed of Baja Bug and VW suspension technology. |

It doesnt necessarily depend on how far they stick out of the end of the arm, where is the grove in the pin located to the relationship of the pinch bolt in the arm? Maybe it's a spindle issue? |

The stock link pins don't stick out far enough to allow you to adjust the play in the linkpin |

Custom made arms perhaps?
My arms all use longer pins so every time I sell an old set I have to sell the pins with them and make new ones, didn't think that through  |

Post a photo of the arm and the spindles. If you have Combo Spindles you will need the threaded link pins which are a little longer than the stock link pins because the king pin is larger |

The front trailing arms are probably latest rage #413052
