I recently bought a 1970 beetle with an auto stick I’m wondering what the value of these cars are I can’t find anything on the web about the value
It is all stock and has no rust other than where the battery is
I would rate this one as being fair what would the value be?
And what would the value be if it was restored?

Thank you

If you are located in the Pacific or Mountain time zones or parts of Texas/Oklahoma, then the supply of VW's is relatively high. The market value of an unrestored solid and complete '70 is in the 3K to 5K range. Add maybe 1K for east coast (essentially the cost and hassle of transporting the car east). Autostick seems to reduce value by a bit - maybe $500 to $1K.

Restoring it can add value but can also subtract value depending on what you do and how you do it. You will not make a profit unless you happen to be Chris Vallone at Classic VW. Most of us restore these cars not for the profit but because it is absolutely our favorite way to spend our time. Yes, we are sick. 8-[

I’m not really looking to profit off it I just wondered because everything I found on the internet said the auto stick was rare as most people hated it and pulled it out to drop in a manual
I got the car to do a motor swap I really want to do a rx7 rotary motor but I live in Colorado so I can find Subaru motors all day long for next to nothing
I was mainly worried I would be ruining a rare jem
I’ve been on CL for 3 months now looking for the right car and it’s the first time I’ve even seen the auto stick

Well for one thing a rx7 rotary isn't a Subaru. A better candidate for total destruction is a Super. The strut front end is so much more modern than the old bars.
Another is a big project like this, unless you are all in, usually ends up in a half destroyed rusting unfinished hulk.

I like to peruse the Bugs for sale here in the Samba Classifieds. I’ve noticed that in th past few years, the autostick is priced about the same as a manual. In the future, I expect the autostick to surpass the manual because so many new drivers, either don’t know how, or don’t want to learn how, drive a manual.

We’ve gone past the decades when driving any automatic was somehow considered by many to be somewhat less manly. And I’ve seen so many manuals for sale in the Classifieds, where the father was selling the Bug because his kid didn’t like messing with a clutch, and shifting the gears. The autostick pretty much renders that problem a moot issue.

Yes, autosticks are rare, compared to manuals. They always were, but now they’re rarer, due to so many of the original 10% being changed to manuals.

I wouldn’t mind having one. They’re fun cars to drive—especially if you’re prone to killing the engine off the line.

I drove one daily for a year and loved it, low gear was great for beating everything off the lights until about 20mph  I converted it to manual though and didn't regret it. I made a profit between selling all the auto parts and replacing them with manual parts.

If I was looking for a bug to swap out the drive train for something else entirely, I'd buy another stickshift as they can be found cheaper and the parts are more valuable.

I had an rx7 when I was younger and it was my only car at the time it was treble in the snow and I never could get it to pass emissions that was a big down fall of the rotary motor
As far as getting a super beetle I already have the 1970 auto stick it was a dirt cheap deal that was hard to pass up if I was going to use the car ever day a would go super but I'm not this is a street/strip project

Get the autostick running and driving well and just do that- drive it while you look for a better cut-it-up project. Or better yet, buy an unfinished project from another guy who thought it would be easy to do an engine swap. You might find beetles aren't your cup of tea so you'll save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Well I put my foot in my mouth I ended up with a 1973 super beetle as well so now I have both so I’m going to motor swap the super and possibly restore the 1970 auto stick

autosticks are worth tens of thousands of dollars, sometimes upper 5 figures. They are exceedingly rare and the demand amongst collectors is huge. You should have no problem pulling at least 30k-40k, I got offered 60k for mine the other day but that's just because I've owned it since it was new and have all receipts/ records.

Here is a 70 in Craigslist here in Orange County. $2400.00. Looks to be in fair shape. Might be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Might be an investment.

Are those rims stock? I have the same ones on mine and did it come from the factory with the turn signals in the bumper mine has the same look I just assumed that they were shaved off and the bumper added along with the rims but now I’m woundering if it was unique to the auto stick does anyone know?
Thank you

Mexican bumpers. They came from that factory with the signals in the bumper. Not too sure when they started putting them in the bumper, but definitely after 1979.

Rims are 8 spoke Empi rims. They were popular in the 80s. Came in gold and black.

I tried buying that a month ago, there's something very wrong with the seller though, car been for sale for months, add says quick sale wanted, I offered him full asking price but he turned me down...

Meantime I bought another one instead, it's on way to me now and this guy is still looking a buyer.

I've never driven an auto stick on a Beetle. Is it a three-speed gearbox vs the manual which is a four-speed?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw5MPiyPQSU

Does a Beetle with auto stick feel quicker or slower than a manual Beetle? Do you have to place the auto stick in neutral when stopped (e.g., at a stop sign or light) or just keep your foot on the brake?

Thanks!

The autostick gears are like 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
