Most classic-VW shops don’t name their part manufacturers online, making it hard for customers to make informed choices. The only way to protect yourself from cheap reproductions is to buy parts only where a shop names the manufacturers. To help other VW owners find the best available parts, I am posting my parts list here with links to retail shops that sell these OEM brands or high-quality reproductions. I hope that stronger demand will encourage the OEMs to continue production, strengthen the manufacturers of high-quality reproductions, and inspire more retail shops to post this information.

My list is for a stock 1973 Super Beetle and would differ for other years and models. I include parts made by Volkswagen, OEMs for VW, and specialist manufacturers. I generally don’t include parts made by diversified aftermarket companies, except a few German ones that are known for particularly high quality. Multiple OEM brands or high-quality reproductions are available for some parts. If a manufacturer has reportedly discontinued production, but a significant amount of stock is still available, then I say that a part is NOS.

My links are to generally reliable retail sources, which may not always be the ones closest to you. Searching for the manufacturer name and part number together may provide more options. I do not provide a link if a shop does not name the manufacturer or brand online. The closest thing to an exception is Kaeferland, where you can see their product line by searching their site for KLF or looking in their paper catalog.

I list U.S. and European sources for most parts, where I have found retailers who name the manufacturers on both sides of the ocean. Wolfsburg West sells a lot of German Kaeferland parts. Unfortunately, most U.S. retailers don’t name VEWIB parts, but Airhead and WCM carry some of them, if you want to call and ask. I’m not sure if VEWIB, a high-quality German manufacturer and wholesaler, sources particular parts from OEMs or German shops like Hoffmann Speedster or Kaeferland, so I provide both the VEWIB brand and specialist shop links below. Some VEWIB parts may be NOS.

Buying parts from Europe includes a shipping charge that is usually in the range of 50 to 100 Euros to the U.S. It’s worthwhile to do your research in advance, maybe split the cost with a friend, and order once.

I list brake parts here and will post other systems elsewhere, with cross-references. I will edit this original post while I can, but eventually it will become dated, and I may post an updated version below. The list is organized from the top to the bottom and the front to the back of the car. I give the applicable model years for each part and specify whether it fits Super Beetles (SB) only. Otherwise, it fits Beetles and Super Beetles for those years. Part numbers are from the historic spare parts catalog posted by VW Classic Parts, although some retailers use different numbers.

Finally, the take-home messages are: 1) you don’t have to settle for junk; and 2) if you care more about price than quality, then please consider that your life depends on the brake system.

NOTES
1. VW part numbers that start with N… are sometimes listed online without the first zero after the N. I believe that VW added that zero later.
2. OEM Continental now owns OEMs ATE and VDO. ZF Friedrichshafen now owns OEM brands TRW, Lemforder, Sachs, and Boge. FTE was a subsidiary of OEM FAG (which still makes bearings) and is now independent. OEMs Bosch, Cohline, and GEMO are independent.

I just bought some ATE wheel cylinders for the rear brakes on my '71 Karmann Ghia. Couldn't find them locally so bought from these guys at a really good price.

Bummer. I happen to be in London now and followed your links to European venders of quality master cylinders. I would have saved shipping to my temporary London apartment, but all three venders reported their master cylinder are out of stock.

Kaeferland and CSP have Ate master cylinders for Super Beetles, but at a higher price. I would contact them to be sure before ordering. Keep your eye on Autodoc, they may be back soon.
