69 Autostick pumped all it's oil out through the bell housing.

Most likely the seal, are there good and bad replacements!

Is this a normal failure?

What happens if the tank is overfilled?

he said it pumped out the bellhousing ...so its a converter seal/bushing problem not a pump problem...however you stated pumped all its oil out, not atf....so if it pumped motor oil out and level in engine dropped then theres a pump problem also....gotta be a little more specific....there are 2 different styles of converter seal....(spring inside and spring outside)....these need to be matched to the converter used ....and any year converter will fit any year trans....so after 40 yrs who knows which converter is in there so you cant really order a seal till its apart...the later converter 's neck is the same diameter all the way down and uses the seal with the spring inside....the earlier one has a taper on the end and uses the outside spring....unless the tank was filled all the way to the top i dont think there would be an issue...if it actually blew the seal off the piece it hammers on to you have a pressure problem....possibly blocked return line..idr if theres a pressure relief valve in the pump cover....i think there is....and if all the fluid came out and you ran the system dry there could be damage to the pump or converter bushing...you never know what the previous owner dummied together to sell the car

Forgive my post,

All the atf pumped out through the bellhousing. Running the motor caused a visible stream pouring out the case opening.

Not sure how much atf was in the system, but it was stated that a quart was added.

This is a 69 and from what I can gather, all original.

Interesting that there may be multiple seals to choose from.

As a 69 it would be considered earlier, and the statement that it used a spring.

Do you have the diagrams of these seal type?

All the torque converter seals use springs, the better ones are considered to be the latter type with the spring around the inside lip instead of the outside, and a "ribbed" beveled inner edge that mates to the torque converter.

Here is a very informative thread on this subject over at www.vwar.org:

my spare seal has VW part # 001-301-083 A. It has the beveled inner edge and spring on the inside:

AS well as ridges along the inner edge:

This is all assuming of course that it IS the torque coverter seal and not the ATF hoses attached to the bell housing:

You might inspect the banjo fittings on those also while the engine is out.
