View original topic: What makes the porsche g50 so loved?

I have been reading up quite a bit on all the various transmission swaps people do and I have come across time and time again people talking about the G50 like its the holy grail of swaps. My question is, what exactly makes this transmission so coveted?

gears Mon Jul 09, 2018 12:59 pm

In '87, Porsche finally ditched the POS Porsche-patented synchronizer system in favor of the Borg Warner cone style synchros that VW had been using for decades. The Getrag-manufactured G50 is far more robust than the previous 915, utilizing 85mm shaft-to-shaft distance (915 was 76mm), and a far stronger hypoid R&P design. The added strength comes with a weight penalty, however ..

5 speed,super strong,sorta fits and it's a por....sha....

Eskamobob1 Mon Jul 09, 2018 1:08 pm

hahahaha. So the realistic final answer is just that its a more robust porsche 5 speed and has a sweet, sweet hipster dogleg? I am planning a subaru engine swap and was looking into a transmission swap as well, (with the subaru already being like 5k) do you guys think its worth it to look into ultimately? Or just look at a subaru, berg 5 (cant find hp ratings on it though), or just reinforced standard?

EDIT: Btw, the dog leg realy does kinda tug on my hipster heart strings and I dont like it...

It's not a dog-leg 1st like the 901, which is a PITA .. but the gearing isn't correct for a VW unless maybe the 4.00 R&P is installed ($$$)

I have no idea why I had it in my mind that it was a dog leg. As for gearing, I am looking at an EJ207 swap and the power bands of the EJ207 and the H6 used in the carrera 3.2 seem fairly similar (most of their grunt at 4500-6500/7k), but im not sure the price jump from a subaru 5 speed (or even 6) to the G50 feels justified.

Depends on the power of the subaru you are swapping in.a beefed up stock could work with a stock subaru if you drive it right.if you are looking at 250 hp maybe a bus box, anything above that I would go for a subarugears transmission. They hold up to 400 hp in all wheel drive so at 2 wheel you should be good up to 500hp.

Im not realy looking at any crazy levels of boost as this is my DD, so im expecting maybe 250 at the crank, but not much more than that. Either way though, I think the Subaru trans is just the right way to go if im already looking in the 5k range unless I want to go crazy and get something custom from rancho or some such (which I doubt ill do tbh).

Kinda OT, but as for the syncro, have you seen any AWD bug builds using a subaru swap? I figure there has got to be someone crazy enough to have tried, but i cant find anything

That would be something to see! I think there is someone in Europe building an all wheel drive bug i just don't recall the name.at 250 hp you could use either a bus box or subaru.the only advantage would be fifth gear on the subaru and probably length (no adapter plate)....

So far as I know, these guys are still running a G50 with the dog box conversion shown in my avatar:

Haha. Well maybe one day when I have the shop space to build an entirely custom chassis Ill do one. As for subbie vs bus, yah. I think that I realy do want that higher over drive of the 5th gear, but ill have to do a lot more research. Its kind of annoying that as it currently stands my tranny is going to cost as much as literally the entire engine swap, but if thats what needs to be, its what needs to be.

Out of curiosity, why even go with a g50 at that point? I would immagine all said and done they wernt under 10k on that tranny, and AFAIk there is some nice custom shit out there for that price

?? Maybe Skinne determined this G50 kit was superior to other "custom shit" out there ??

thats so sweet I can almost taste it...

Out of curiosity I looked for a g50 online to see what they cost. WOW! I don't think I'll be getting one unless I win the lottery!

I didnt mean that as a diss of any sort. It just seems to me that you can get a sequential with custom gearing for probably about the same price, so I was curious why he went with set ratios (plus I was under the impression G50s could only handle ~300hp).

Btw. "custom shit" is just a turn of phrase.

right? Even a standard converted subbie trans is 5-6k. Its kinda mind blowing when you realize you need ot budget the same for your trans as you do your engine

gears Tue Jul 10, 2018 10:39 am

Not sure why you would think Skinne went with "set ratios"? There are perhaps 60 different ratios available for G50, in both synchronized helical and dogged straight-cut. The G50/50 version (like Skinne runs) has withstood 800+ hp in numerous drag cars, as well as a number of 911s set up for the "Texas Mile". Sequential conversion kits have been produced for them, as well.

I hear you on the cost. Value of used cores has tripled in the last few years. I could kick myself for not hanging onto a few ..
