  View original topic: CE vs CO gearbox - problems and solutions ?
freddie_poland Tue Feb 20, 2018 12:58 pm

Dear, greetings from Poland. Since 8 years I am the owner of 1973 highroof T2 1600 ccm bus. Since some time I had a problem with manual gearbox and now I decided to take it out. I noticed that in my model was installed gearbox with code "CE". After the inspection some "working" elements must be changed, like reverse gear wheel or some others.....(no idea how to call them in English) :)

question 1: Where shall I look for the spare parts new or used?
question 2: I have at home a gearbox coded "CO" what are real differences between "CO' and "CE" ?
question 3: . Does anybody know, if "working" elements of "CO" can be used in "CE" as a replacenet ?

Thanks a lot for help
Freddie

if you have to ask those questions - stay out of the gearbox. It takes special tools.

Nigel posted this in another forum. I cannot vouch for it.

Here is the information on VW Type 2 manual transaxles, I have collected to date.

There were at least twelve manual transaxle codes for the 1968~71, 1972~75 & 1976~79 VW 1600 Type 2s; including various combinations of limited-slip differential and higher final-drive ratio for mountainous territories. I have yet to find any official reference to a CO code!?! The CE code, corresponds to a 1972~75 VW Type 2, with orthodox open differential and standard final-drive ratio

There were two manual transaxle codes for the 1974~75 VW 1800 Type 2:

CM - orthodox open differential;
CN - limited-slip differential.

Note that these lists do NOT necessarily include, transaxle details for the 1968 onward, Argentinian, Brazilian & Mexican built vehicles (either Bay-Window models or Bay-Window cum Split-Screen hybrid models), some of which had factory-fitted, VW 1600 Type 1 style engines with twin carburettors, for either fuel-ethanol (high-compression ratio of 10 : 1) or petrol (i.e. gasoline), 1400 cm³ or 1800 cm³ water-cooled VW engines for either fuel-ethanol or petrol (i.e. gasoline) and a water-cooled VW diesel engine of unknown size.

Note a possible error regarding the 3•28 reverse-gear ratio, for manual-transaxle codes CP to CX (i.e. 1976~79 VW 2000 Type 2 & 1976~79 VW 1600 Type 2). According to Stan Wohlfarth, editor of VW-Audi manuals, at Robert Bentley Publishers, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, who publish the Volkswagen of America, 1968~79 VW Type 2 Service Manual, the USA specification, 1976~79 VW 2000 Type 2's reverse-gear ratio, is 3•78.
