Well yesterday I found out my Hurst shifter was in critical need of attention, considering the fact that the top mount plate was cracked. After doing some research I found a member who sells a repair plate here. But me being the frugal (code for cheap) person that I am, plus with my infinite desire to learn, I decided to fix the shifter myself.
Here's the cracked top plate:
First thing first was a clean up and a disassembly.
After a quick wash in the parts cleaner.
And disassembled. You can see I made a simple template with a piece of cardboard.
Then I went to Lowes to get a 3/4" pvc pipe for the shifter rod tool and while there I came up with the idea to grab a few laminate floor samples. FREE!!!
The laminate is a composite. Plenty strong but flexible and easy to cut, drill and file.
And I started making my new plate.
After filing it a few more times to make it look pretty, it was done.
Then it was all about putting it back together. I cleaned the shifter, lubricated it and tested its operation. All working good. Just missing the one bolt but I got plenty extra. I didn't want to over-polish the shifter since I wanted it to have some "patina". I think it came out good. I'll be putting a shifter boot over the base so it doesn't matter if it has that fake wood look :wink:
So to recap. Using FREE laminate samples works great because they are easy to cut, drill and file. Plus they are strong and flexible enough which is great for this application. |

Why would you want it to be flexible?

Maybe flexible wasn't the correct word. The laminate composite flooring has a bit of give to it but it won't let the broken plate move.
