Hey, Im baja on a budget and I am looking to change the exhaust on my bug. I have a 1776 engine and I would like to replace the current exhaust with a stinger style exhaust. My questions are; 1 1/2 or 1 5/8? Chrome, Stainless or ceramic coated? And lastly I would like it to sound good but I dont want to annoy everyone on the block so without doing a muffler will baffles dampen the noise or should I just get a muffler? I dont drive this as much as I would like so I dont know if I need a $500 exhaust but I hate buying things twice cause I was cheap. I dont want to have a rusty mess after my first year with the thing. Thanks in advance. |

Your neighbors will hate you if you install a stinger. |

These sound reasonable. Not quiet, but not wildly loud unless you hammer down. |

Unless you have two neighbors that have Harley Choppers...then the rest of the neighbors will still hate them more. My 1776 with stinger is still nowhere near as loud as their S&S powered choppers. Don't know if its right or wrong but I have the 1 1/2 Tri-mill with black coating. Black needs removed and hi-temp put on if you go that route...or some of the rat-guys just exhaust tape them. |

my old rail had the stinger and it was much quieter than my new one with dual headers I'm going to put a stinger on soon as I can they both have the same motor also |

Even baffled I think their still ridiculously loud. My buggy had one and I ran with it for a few years before i got tired of all the noise. Not being able to hold a conversation with my passenger without yelling and the ringing ears after driving for a while really sucked !
That said, if you like a little noise without being stupid loud a glass pack style muffler works pretty well. My friend has one on his rail and its not all that loud. |

That is what I am looking for. I love the idea of heat tape vs. chrome or other options. But I want to be able to hear my music while cruising. In all honesty my neighbor can/will get over it but I am getting older and really enjoy a cruise. The idea of load pipes isnt as important anymore. Any suggestions of stinger style mufflers that I could get that I could add a glass pack to? |

Im checking these out. What do you think for size? How does size affect performance. I have ridiculously large tire so I have no real performance. Just curious on exhaust size. |

I would lean towards a 1 1/2" exhaust unless you have a high performance engine with high flow heads, high compression, big cam etc. |

1 1/2 for the 1776 should work great.
I would run a stinger when I was off roading at the dunes for a little more power and heat convection/radiation or for going to a show.
After a while it gets tiresome of the noise and then worry about rain rusting out my header.
The glasspack I run on my buggy (Manx sidewinder) is just about as loud at my stinger plus I get a lot of popping as I throttle down.
Just get good at swapping them out... |

I run both a Baja style header/stinger and a merged racing header/stinger on my rail. Luckily the baffle is interchangeable between the two stingers. While my driving typically is concentrated toward riding down gravel backroad trails and the occasional race, I still will drive it around the neighborhood every once in a while for the sake of getting it out and driving. I no longer live in the country where I can make some noise and not worry about offending anyone, as we now live in a nice quiet neighborhood of individuals, that as far as I can tell, aren't into the automotive arts. With that said, I do feel a little self-conscious while riding around with the baffle, but it isn't offensive to the point that they would be terribly annoyed (providing it isn't an everyday, all day thing). At idle and putting around at low rpm it's not to bad at all, but once you start getting between 1500-2000+ rpm, it can get a little annoying. I think I'm going to order a 3-bolt flanged muffler attachment to put on the Baja exhaust. It would likely make a big difference.
Just a side note that I've noticed between the two exhausts....The direct path of sound has a lot to do with the perception of the drivers hearing. I've noticed that my the Baja style stinger is noticeably louder than that of the merged racing header just due to its location. In other words, my ears are more shielded by the direction the stinger is pointed as well as the mass of the engine with the merged header. But with the Baja style there's a more direct path for the sound waves to reach my ears. Of course this is in a rail, so if you're running a Baja it might be much better.
1-1/2" is a good choice. As far as coatings go, if you're on a budget and can only afford raw steel... If prepped and cured correctly, I've found that the aluminum looking VHT header paint does really nicely. You might have to touch up an area or two inbetween seasons, but I haven't had any issues with pealing. |

consider the fact that you may need a spark arrestor off road. that stinger may turn into a legal hassle |

"tape" just rusts the crap out of pipes, and IMFHO its use is mostly just because of a fad... |

May not be what you're looking for but I was in the same boat while updating my rail this spring. I settled on this and am more than happy. 3 light coats of VHT paint and so far so good
