View original topic: MENDEOLA MD4-2D trans and limited gearing too tall or ok
58ragman Sat Sep 03, 2016 11:42 am

Looking into a mendeola for my turbo and have decided on a MD4-2d thing is the gearing is super limited here is the set up

2386 cc turbo power to 3200- 6500

trans set up

3.88 ring

3.11 1st
1.93 2nd
1.39 3rd
1.09 4th

26" tall tire

if i go up in ratios it screws up the acceleration pattern

if i change tires sizes it again screws up the acceleration and has laggin between gears.

Im driving this on the street and maybe some whoever gets to the finish line first.Other than that no trailer my car to drag strip and perform.

Strictly a radical street car basic internals killer heads and mega boost.

the mendeola i guess was mainly a sand trans because the best ring and pinion is a 3.88 nest one jumps to 4.86 then 5.14 hardly a street trans at all.

If i go to a MD4e the trans is basically the same as a rhino trans type 1 case on steroids but the internals and still type one and will break.

will my motor be able to power the trans

Depending on your cam and turbo, your engine may actually like the taller 1-2 out of the hole. The 3-4 gearing should be fine, especially on the street where the Type 1 1.04 4th x 3.88 R&P is a very common combination, and works well on the highway/freeway (at least when cruising at the speed-limit :D ).

( only post here about MD4-2D , still searching, thanks. )

Have one on the way, going to try -
3.88 R&P,
2.70 1.86 1.35 0.70
Tallest set I think currently.

w/ 305/35 R18 - 26.5" dia .

motor has high torque and flat curve.

Not going to say what motor until it actually starts working :)

I am a dealer for Mendeola transaxles, you wont break an E-box on asphault. It has the same ring and pinion as a 2-d. Untill you get to pro-mod status, low 8 second passes, there is no need for a 2-d.

Thanks for the heads up scott and what about a bus trans how much power can be put to that trans everyday without breaking thats my main concern 300-350 ft lbs torque.

I was told a bus trans in a street car no matter how radical will be able to handle it.

If I supposedly go to a clutch management system I can get by easily with a type one built to the hilt trans whats your thoughts

A subagears transmission can handle 280 hp stock and 650 with aftermarket gears.
A plus is that you get 5 speeds and any ring and pinion you want to choose.

You can buy them fully built in CA. for $4500.00 shipped.

You might have to buy axles and mounts yet though......

I saw a few buggies that had the Suby engine and transmission installed and they were NICE!!
Everyone I talked to loved them.

They cruise 70 mph at 2500 rpm..... An aircooled engine would need to rev a little higher at cruise for cooling I'm sure.

Most prostocks and pro turbo cars run built bus boxes, that would be more than enough for you

Just curious, if MD4-2D is an option, why do you not recommend? Is there a problem with these transaxles?

It seems to have the best choice of gears, more combos than 091 002 Vanagon, please correct me on details, thanks.

There is almost NO info on the web about any street/track cars using MD4-2D, do I have to go to the dark web, or investigate personally to find out how MD4-2D is used besides off road rigs?
