This link is to a forum thread talking about John Deere Blitz Black.
I thought others that have been contemplating this paint choice might benefit from this info I found while searching the web.
Here are some of the finer points that I felt inclined to copy and save:
Houston Locations near me...I'm sure there are lots of locations all over Texas and the country, but apparantly it is hard to get in Cali due to the stricter pollution laws/regulations...you'd have to get someone out of Cali to order it from John Deere and then ship it to you personally...they won't even ship this stuff to Cali...and they actually have an alternative part number for an alternate to the original Blitz Black.
In the Houston area - John Deere Blitz Black can be purchased HERE:
5313 I-45 South
La Marque, TX
409-986-9141
OR HERE
BROOKSIDE EQUIPMENT SALES
7707 MOSLEY
HOUSTON TX 77017
United States
713-943-7100
Prices:
Gallon - $29.74
Aerosol spray can- $7.00 (estimate)
*for touch ups and stuff
*this is pre-mixed to match the paint purchased by the gallon exactly and also the 8:1 mixture ratio mentioned below.
From: Valspar Paint General Manager. (They make Blitz Black for John Deere.)
#1. If the existing paint is relatively good condition (ie. no peeling paint, no large amount of rust, etc) no primer is needed. Scuff sand the existing paint with extra fine grit sandpaper, wipe surface with a clean cloth and then apply John Deere Blitz Black.
#2. If primer is used due to bare metal or minor surface defects, we suggest the John Deere Buff Primer (available in aerosols, quarts and gallons). This is a very "user friendly" formulation that provides good sandability, excellent filling/sealing properties and enhanced corrosion resistance.
#3. A reducer is needed for optimum sprayability and appearance. We suggest the use of the John Deere thinner/reducer (available in quarts gallon and fives). It is formulated specifically for John Deere paints. The mix ratio is 8 parts John Deere paint : 1 part John Deere thinner.
#4. John Deere Blitz Black is an "air dry" formulation...but if a you want the paint to dry faster and harder, John Deere has a hardener in their product line. It is available in pints, part number REN3001. The mix ratio is 8 parts John Deere paint : 1 part REN3001 hardener : 1 part John Deere thinner.
Some more info...the exact same formulation is used in the aerosols as in the quarts/gallons. This helps with touch-ups and is critical in low gloss applications such as the Blitz Black. |

Thanks for the color info. I picked up a spray can today to try before buying a gallon. The Blitz Black spray can has a TY 25311 part number on it. I sprayed part of an old fender to try it out before I buy a gallon and spray my whole car. http://68.55.195.90/vw/Rods/bugrod-sale.jpg |

I'd like to see some pics of the fender you sprayed if you don't mind. I'm debating on whether to buy the paint and have someone do it professionally, or just paint it myself. I'm leaning towards paying someone pro to do it...and do it right, because I'm just not experienced AT ALL with painting. I don't want to end up spending more money to correct the things I screw up in the process.
Oh yeah...sweet looking project you got there. Post some pics of that fender if you can. Thanks. |

when spraying this paint, its a bit thin. actually, a lot thin. so spray heavy. i dont think you will have trouble with it running at all. it didnt seem to run at all. the spots that were sprayed heavy , that normally you would expect running to occur, turned out best. the rest, where you seem to spray normal, didnt coat 100%. good luck.
piics of JD blitz black..
ha,...u can get it for 5.00 gallon in indiana...
HERE IS ANOTHER CAR BLITZ BLACK IN INDIANA

Just wanted to let yall know of one more good satin black paint. I used Rustoleum "satin black" This is acrylic enamel paint similar to the John Deer paint. It is available for about 6.75 a quart at Home Depot. I used spray cans do paint my car. I used about 8 cans to do the whole car. (convertible). This paint holds up really good in the weather and sun. It is satin color but you can actually wax it and it won't soak up the wax. |
