Trying to install light, perforated-vinyl, TMI headliner in 1974 coupe.

I cut rod pockets back back three inches from ends of rods.

Headliner is tight front to back, Can't get wrinkles out of the areas along the side rails. Pulling material tighter only exacerbates wrinkle problem. What will eliminate wrinkles?

Yes, I laid out the headliner in the sun before attempting installation.

Once you get it all in place you can use a heat gun and CAREFULLY heat the vinyl to shrink it and get rid of your wrinkles

If a hair dryer can provide enough heat, it may be easier to use without accidentally scorching the material.
... or perhaps maybe even one of those clothes steamers?

A steamer is what most pros use, if you have one use it.

Have you installed the window rubber alloy channels yet? My liner had a few wrinkles in the areas you speak of, I found a few relief cuts here and there in the trouble areas fixed them straighten out pretty well, some were a few inches away from the rods, I left lots of excess material and re-glued and re-positioned quite a bit before I did the final cut and install of channels

Pretty much all the wrinkles are gone now after a few months, This is also TMI by the way
