84 Vanagon in Florida. Registration expired while I was out of the country. Paid fees, but incomplete because no SMOG check. Driving back next week. Must get SMOG asap on return. Even though I filled out form as to why SMOG not possible, they say vehicle is still subject to citation/impound until process is complete. Need recommendation for SMOG station in San Diego area that knows what a Vanagon is.

I used this shop and failed the first test. The technician knew my cat was the culprit. Recommended a exhaust shop 1 block behind his facility for a good price on repair. Passed smog test with flying colors on the second round. Pleasure to do business with these guys. They usually have a coupon on the website too.

While not a smog shop Import Car Service in Lemon Grove will prep a Westy for Smog.

Seems to be near the Smog Shop mentioned above.

Our '81 Westy get seen there occasionally for things I can't work on in the driveway.

find a palce that wont do the evap test. if they dont have the special adaptor cap for the van, they pass without having to do the test. if they do have the cap, then they will do the test, and you might fail it.

got to love the smog nazis, out of the counuof, car is in Florida, you explain that to them and your still threatened with impound!

I've had good luck with:

Smog Clinic, 7535 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Unit C, San Diego, CA 92111 (Kearny Mesa area), and

Carlsbad Smog-Test Only Center, 1060 Auto Center Ct, Unit R, Carlsbad, CA 92008 (North County)

Both are experienced with Vanagons, and are straight shooters.

Ive used OB Smog on Voltaire (in Ocean Beach) twice for my van and it was quick and easy. They do plenty of Vanagon smogs and have great ratings on yelp.
