Would REALLY like to get my hands on a Superior Motors frame. A good friend who has been very helpful thru all my yrs driving VW's use to own that dealership.

Thanks

hey sloan i'll take a superior, too when you find a box! Let me know if you come across anymore pensacola frames. All the hardcore locals should have one on the back.

Finally got my University (thanks to this thread) but the ever elusive Superior is yet to be found. I've only seen one EVER on a local bug that comes to the shows some times.

You might check with Henry (BoxonWheel). He was looking for that frame and might have a match to it that came with his '57 deluxe.

Want Art Collins (Savannah, GA) dealer frames, and also 1962 Georgia plates.

mpribanic Tue Feb 13, 2007 4:49 pm

Was your car sold at Art Collins? I've never heard of it, asked my wife, from Savannah, & she hadn't either. I can ask her family if they are familiar with it.

I'm from Savannah also and have never seen a VW with a plate frame from there. Been to a couple of VW shows in Savannah & never seen on an a car either. Not surprised though.

I might be able to scare up a '62 Georgia plate though. I won't be going back unitl St. Patty's day in March. There's an old 7-11 named Roberts. They have TONS of old Georgia plates. I can have my Father in law check for you.

Looking for a Brundage Motors plate frame. They were a VW dealership in Jacksonville, Atlanta & Miami in the 50's and '60's.

Art Collins Motors was located at 5403 Abercorn Street in Savannah. The paperwork I got with the car contains a customer ID card from them with the original owner's name on it, who lived in Savannah. It looks like Art Collins stopped selling VW's sometime after 1962, from what I have been able to see from dealer listings. So it's not likely I'll ever find a plate frame from them. But it would be real nice if you could locate an original 62 Georgia plate for me, and I would pay you for your trouble.

At some point the first owner moved to Valdosta, Georgia. His wife was a librarian in Valdosta and drove the car 1.5 miles each way to the library and back home for many years. Sometime after 1962 there was a VW dealer in that city, so a plate frame from a Valdosta VW dealer would still be pretty good because at least I could make the Valdosta connection.

Just got off the phone with my father in law. He's not familiar with Art Collins. He did remember a Bill Ussery on Victory drive though.

Roberts 7-11 is next door to his dentist practice. He's in there daily to get snacks. He said he will see if he can get you a '62 tag tomorrow.

Pipken Motors is the VW dealer in Valdosta. They are the oldest VW dealer in the state of Georgia. About 8 years ago I met the owners son and he gave me a plate frame for free. I just gave it to Kathy Jacobs for her bus in November. I have seen several of those plate frames over the years.

Who was the owner in Savannah? It is a very small town if you're from there. Everyone know's everyone. Also what was their address?(out of curiosity)

I'll have to look up that address next time in town to see if the building still exists. There is a guy named Bill Todd who sells parts on this site. He may know of Art Collins. You can probably search the memberlist.

I don't have the Savannah address with me right now (I'm at work) but the name of the first owner was J. Davis Sheppard, also known as "Doc" Sheppard. He graduated from Georgia Tech and was a radio personality for a while on WTOC, and then was station manager at WDAR. His obituary says he used to host weekly live broadcasts from the Gold Room at the Desoto Hotel. He also owned a shop named The Camera Center. In addition he was a charter member of Tybee Light Power Squadron and of the Savannah Camera Club, Oglethorpe Investment Club and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Association, as well as a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, serving on the church vestry.

His wife's name was Elizabeth. She still lives in Valdosta. I spoke to her recently about the car.

Small world. The Desoto Hotel(now the Hilton) was about 15 feet behind my condo. You could always see my Porsche 356 or '65 bus parked on the brick streets around the Desoto Hilton. While washing my cars I met alot of former 356 and bus owners over the three years I lived on the corner of Macon st, Drayton St, and Harris st. Many of them staying at the Desoto.
Spoke to the Father in law. He could only find a '67 Ga. tag. No luck on the '62. I will keep my eyes peeled for you.

I like how he says "DOWN to 30F". You oughta be up here. We were hoping all week it would get UP to 30F! :D

Update: my wife corrected me. 30F in Florida is pretty catastrophic. The cold up here makes me forget that it's all relative.
