I have seen the following Idaho plate frames from the 60s:
Wiehle Motor Company - boise 7.58-11.60
Capitol Volkswagen - boise 1.61-10.66
youree motor co. - twin falls 4.60-10.71
Town and country - caldwell 10.66-1990s
Norm Bishop - boise - 3.67-1980s
University Volkswagen - moscow 11.69-1980s
A&M Volkswagen - moscow 11.68-6.69
I have seen badges from:
Capitol Volkswagen - boise 1.61-10.66
Bob Reese - twin falls 1959 only
Town and country - caldwell 10.66-1990s
some of those dealerships were only around for a year or two. I have seen several other idaho plate frames, but I only want ones from the 50s and 60s. there were only 3 dealerships in 2 cities in idaho in the '50s and 16 dealerships in 8 cities in idaho throughout the '60s and 18 dealerships in 11 cities in the 70s. there were a total of 31 different dealerships in idaho prior to 1979. no idaho city ever had more than one dealership at a time.
I have a late style capitol volkswagen plate frame and a capitol volkswagen body badge. I have been hunting an early capitol volkswagen plate frame for years, but the owner won't it go.
the majority of plate frames out there are from the 70s-80s. finding a plate frame from the 60s is rather hard. finding one from the 50s is near impossible. plate frames were made from really crappy pot metal and they pit like crazy. in is very hard to find a plate frame that would look presentable on a show car. |

BUCIOBATISTI wrote: OK, here's a scenario I *heard* a great idea from a guy who runs a DMV Registration service here in San Diego. He is also a classic car buff (muscle cars) so he can sympathize about wanting to backregister Black Plates onto the appropriate cars.
This is something he mentioned and it sounds interesting. He said that it could be possible to order new custom California plates, like the style with the Whale Tail or the little kids hand, or whatever, in a 6 digit configuration. He mentioned that if you could get them to run a series of letters and digits the same as what you already have on a set of un-registered 6 digit Black Plates, you could then pay the custom plate fee, get your new white custom plates, but toss them in the trash and mount your Black Plates with the new sticker. Makes sense but I've never heard of it being successfully done or attempted. Possibly a great tip or avenue to pursue.
People were doing this in the early 90ies.
The Ca. DMV will NO LONGER ALLOW you to get a persalized plate with three numbers followed by three letters. |

I acutally noticed this the other day in traffic. Someone had one of those new plates that are being issued with the three alpha-three numeric combos (ones the DMV is giving out, these aren't personalized), but it was reversed. It was numeric-alpha. They're just out there giving away all the combos that aren't still in use anymore. :(

Taylor,
I don't think that will affect the old black California plates that some of us are holding onto. They were all 'alpha-numeric'. Hopefully 'Arnold' will let me put my set on my bus some day...

No, it won't. Nor will it affect the already existing blue/yellow plates. The DMV is just using numbers that have fallen out of use or are already "clear" by DMV standards.

I was just looking at this old thread today. I am still looking for frames from both Montessi Motors in Connecticut and Brown Volkswagen from Tulsa.
I just picked up three frames today, all from Hawaii. I have a matched pair of frames from Hilo-Kitagawa Volkswagen, and a single Airport VW from Honolulu. These could be traded for what I need. |

If anyone is interested in selling any hawaii dealer frames i would be interested! I'm trying to find either a single or a pair for my bus as it was originally shipped there so it would be quite cool!
