i tried to find you the good set that Bus Depot / BusDepot sells but their webpage is a fucking joke. It takes me in a loop to enter the vehicle. I do then it takes me back to enter a new vehicle. Every since they went to that new system I pretty much stopped buying from them because of the website. They used to have a really good set of plug wires that were outstanding. The Bosch ones tear too easily when putting them in the wire holders. If Napa has a set they are usually pretty good wire sets. SMP used to have really good sets too.

I've always found Bus Depot's website to be silly and finicky, but the reboot has seemingly made it more of a goose chase. I'm literally re-entering my vehicle after every part selected.

I had the exact same issue. Four or five steps to move one click.

I found an old thread with the links people find of the ones that work. FWIW I got rid of the Bosch ones a long time ago. The connectors are really thin and brittle. Just bump one and it shatters. And the wire jacket easily tears putting it into the wire holders.

I run the Duralast Gold in my Type 1. They are actually really nice.

For your Type 4,

Magnecor KV85 part number 4523
8.5mm, MADE IN USA
very nice boots to seal against your tinware

much better than anything else ive seen

https://www.andysautosport.com/products/magnecor__45350.html

i think CB performance may have started selling a white label branded version of them (i think for T1)

best paired with Denso Iridium 5306 IW20 plugs (make sure you buy them from a reputable vendor, there are lots of fakes out there....on ebay etc)

https://www.andysautosport.com/products/denso__IW20.html

if you run those, you will likely change your engine before you change your plugs/wires...and you will definitely will like how they perform...easily worth <$200

EDIT: fixed PN , thank you nigel ... also posted more Magnecor info below .. including cheaper 7mm and 8mm Type 4 wires and also Type 1 applications

for what it’s worth i just got an e from cip1 about these “excellent” european-made wires. anyone had experience with them?

I have these on my van, but it is a 1600

I had to reuse the old coil wire the one in the set is too short.

seem to be fine so far

shoulda extended my quotes around “excellent and european-made.”

they list they as made by cip1 five star. always assumed that meant chinese, but i’ve seeing it on their “european-made” items.

If you use a Pertronix ignition:

The new Pertronix manual emphasizes replacing the solid core spark plug wires with wound "mag" core wires to prevent EMF interference messing with the pertronix ignitor over time. They also emphasized using a 3.0 Ohm coil max. The Bosch Blue coil measures almost 4 Ohm, so I replaced both the coil and plug wires with Pertronix brand ones. The wound core pertronix plug wire set is for a type 1 motor, so you have to fabricate some extenders for the #2 and #4 cylinders to get them past the cooling tin. The plug end connectors are crimped on, so you can't just use your old ones on the new wire set. Kind of a pain....

since nobody else will, I will thank Nigel for his detailed explanation and analysis of something so trivial, as to how our type 4 plug wires interact with the shrouds and head orientation.

This is serious time consuming shit to lay out, and in such a manner to effect a manufacturers’ production.

Here I am fishing around inside the shroud with a telescoping magnet to pick the now removed plug from the abyss of the shroud. and then using a piece of fuel hose to start threading it in before i put my socket, swivel, extension, and ratchet to re-install.
cheers ole’ boy

The beauty of Lemark “Hotwires” and some other generic HT leads, is that they have connectors that fit firmly onto the spark-plugs electrical-connection nipples and have vulcanised rubber boots, which fit snugly over the spark-plugs’ ceramic insulators, effectively eliminating moisture-related problems.

When in 1988/89, I upgraded the 1973 VW 1600 Type 2’s, original VW Type 1 style, AD-Series, twin-port, air-cooled engine’s ignition system, I had substituted Lemark “Hotwires” generic HT leads, with which I was able to use the factory-standard VW air-seals for the spark-plug access holes, in the engine’s sheet-steel cover-plates.

However, this would not be possible for cylinders 2 & 4, on my substitute VW Type 4 style air-cooled engine. In conjunction with a Microdynamics Formula 1 EXD electronic ignition system & Microdynamics Macro Spark ballasted ignition coil (probably not available in North America!), these gave instant, on-the-button starting every time, irrespective of climatic conditions or more than 6-month old petrol. Previously, the engine had been extremely difficult to start after the winter lay-up period or in the morning following a dewy night on a campsite.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/microdynamics.php

The memorandum was prepared at the REQUEST of Lemark, who were unacquainted with VW Type 4 style air-cooled engines, with whom I had negotiated for two FREE complementary half-sets, of two types of Lemark “Hotwires”, standard, off-the-shelf, general-purpose installation adapters, in exchange for the information. Having spent several years, as a professional research scientist cum engineer, I was well accustomed to writing detailed reports.

I wanted to determine whether I could reasonably use generic Lemark “Hotwires” HT leads of appropriate lengths, on my substitute, 1911 cm³ displacement, hybrid VW 17/1800 Type 4 style air-cooled engine, and obtain the required air-seal around the spark-plug access holes, in the engine’s sheet-steel cover-plates. VW Type 4 style air-cooled engines are relatively rare in Great Britain, so individual or complete sets of new, replacement, VW Type 4 style HT leads, would have been difficult to obtain, and would still feature the short-comings of the original factory-fitted HT leads.

If you are still experiencing problems with losing spark plugs inside the VW Type 4 style engine’s cover-plates, perhaps you should have sought advice from me sooner! :?

I don’t know whether the appropriate tools are available in North America, but firmly fixing (possibly using a grub-screw or epoxy adhesive) to an extension-bar of appropriate length, either a magnetic spark-plug socket or a spark-plug socket with internal rubber retainer (which fits snugly over the spark-plug’s ceramic insulator), should not pose major difficulties.

Keep in mind, that it was the British REME – Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (I came across more than a few, during the year I spent at the Royal Military College of Science in 1990~91), which saved Volkswagen from extinction during the months following the end of World War 2, for you to enjoy in the 21st Century! :D 8)

The following VW Type 4 ignition HT leads, appear to be the same as the original factory-fitted ones, that lack any means of excluding condensation - dew formation, on the electrical connection to the spark-plugs and their ceramic insulators.

Here are some more generic and model-specific HT leads for your delectation. Note those listed in 1985 by Biltema for various VW models.

Sparkrite (brand name of Stadium Ltd) “high-performance” HT leads, electronic ignition & ignition coils.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/sparkrite.php

I retro-fitted some of these red Sparkrite HT leads to my 1974 Triumph Toledo 1300 "HL Special" in January 1985; costing me just £0•25 each (i.e. £1•25 for the complete set) at the time, in Halfords stock-clearance sale. :D 8)

They noticeably improved starting in damp weather, which I attributed at least in part, to the rubber boots which fitted snugly over the spark-plugs' ceramic insulators. :D

Biltema (Swedish retail chain for automotive spare-parts, tools & accessories, similar to Halfords in Great Britain) “high-performance” HT leads

These are of identical or similar internal construction to that of the red Sparkrite HT leads which I fitted to my 1974 Triumph Toledo 1300 "HL Special" in January 1985.

T4 - Magnecor 45350 and Denso 5306 plugs :)

When you refer to T4 (interpreted as Mk. 4 or Mark 4 - 4th generation in German, by Volkswagen AG) do you mean the 1993 onward Volkswagen Transporter T4 or the VW Type 4 style air-cooled engine, as used in the 1972 VW 17/18/2000 Type 2, 1980~83 VW Transporter T3, VW 411/412 & VW-Porsche 914!?!

At £103•44 including VAT @ 20%, these Magnecor 45350 HT ignition leads for the LANCIA 4 cylinder Beta Spyder 2.0 DOHC 8v (Marelli Ign.) are rather pricey! There is no information there to suggest that they would be suitable for the VW Type 4 style air-cooled engine! Do you have pictures of them?

yes i know, normally "T4" is T4 as in Eurovan aka Transporter mk4

i meant Type 4 engine as in the 1700/1800/2000 engine used in the 72-79 Bus and Porsche 914 and, obviously, the Type 4 chassis (e.g. 411) vehicles

I'm really glad you asked that question. I bought a set for my Subaru powered Bus, and another set for my Type 4 bus....
(coincidentally, I believe my CB branded 8.5's are also Magnecors on my Type 1 bus.... ~15 years old and still perfect BTW)

also i'll include some pics at the bottom...

45350 is actually the part number for that Subaru EJ25.
I mixed up the two part numbers I had purchased. Woops.
I'll go back and edit to correct it.

Let me try that again:

Magnecor 8.5mm plug wires for Type 4 (1700/1800/2000):
P/N 4523 (NOT 45350)
if you want cheaper ones from Magnecor, there is also:
P/N 4023 (8mm)
P/N 4723 (7mm)

Type 1 would be:
4501 (8.5mm)
4001 (8mm)
4701 (7mm)

You can see the full catalog here
https://magnecorusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/catalog.pdf

They are a bit more expensive, but the thought is...
magnecor.com wrote:
The conductors used in all Magnecor ignition cables will outlast the life of the engine unless deliberately severed.
Life is too short to not use awesome car parts. :)

Read their catalog....decide for yourself. In my opinion their fit, quality and durability are easily worth the price, particularly after you read through their literature and understand what you're buying and the company ethos... and yes, made in the USA by a real company that gives a shit

and here are the photos you asked for - not the greatest in the world but you get the idea
