View original topic: Which Carburator Rebuild Kit?
ctxman Mon Feb 02, 2015 2:46 pm

I was wondering if there is a preferred carb rebuild kit, or ones to stay away from based on your experience. The Walker kit from O'Reilly's looks the same as the GP Sorensen kit from Autozone, but I know looks can be deceiving. There is also the Royze kit from The Bus Depot which is a little more expensive but might be worth it? Thoughts?

Aeromech - the link you posted doesn't seem to work. I'm curious what you were trying to post because I've searched their site for "carburetor and carburetor kit" and nothing comes up.

Go to: autohausaz.com

Type in year 1972 and make Volks

Navigate to fuel systems and find the rebuild kits. I buy a lot of stuff here. Look under ignition and check out their prices on Bosch tune up parts. My local VW parts house sells distributor caps for $15. Autohausaz has them for $5. When you combine good products and prices with free shipping and no sales tax it works out. At least for me.

Got it thanks. I was searching under 1973 since that's the year of my bus. Odd that the same search under the year 73 doesn't have any carb rebuild kits like for the year 72, which is why I couldn't find anything.

Thanks!

Yeah,
I noticed that 73 and 74 didn't have them so I tried 72 and got a hit.

I just rebuilt mine with the Royze kit. Everything seemed to line up OK, the gaskets were a little thin- I had issues with the R carb body upper and lower body mating and getting a good seal. When you get them together you can shine a super bright light to see if the gasket is tight enough.

I haven't run them yet, but they had already been rebuilt with what looked like the same kit before I bought the bus and were working fine.

Looking for any 'New' feed-back on carb rebuild kits for 72-74 model years.

I know quite well that the Royze kits are not like thy were 30-40 years ago and neither is a candy bar the same any more. $1.99 for a Milky-Way that was 5 cents in 1967

If We move from CA. to AZ. next year my powerful 2.0 with big ass valves and
weber carbs will not Pass Arizona's visual inspection no matter how clean it
burns fuel.So just like in the early 80's here in CA i kept a spare engine for
the smog check program. I still have my CB 1700 to plug in but, today i started
rounding up all the air cleaner parts and pulled the old carbs and other items
out to have a look-see :D

I really only will need accelerator pump diaphragms AND perhaps top gaskets as i will, keep the original Solex needle & seat valves.

Or i will just take a chance on the Royze kits

Honestly, the Autozone GP Sorensen rebuild kit is as good as any other these days.

Just make sure the vacuum pull off passage seals wel. It can leak at a small hole punched in the main body to cover gasket, and the gasket between the main body and throttle body. Usually leaks at the main body to cover gasket. Could be old warped covers causing the issues. There is also not a screw near by directly claiming on it. If you assemble and it doesn't hold vacuum, take it appart, dress the gasket, reassemble and test. Hopefully that helped. If it doesn't hold vacuum the vacuum opperated vacuum choke pull offs will not work very well.

Also, I do NOT use ANY new fuel inlet needle valves. I throw all new ones in the trash...always! Clean up the original Solex ball bearing tipped needle valves. The original Solex ball bearing tipped needle valves are way better than anything you can buy new...unless it's NOS Solex ball bearing tipped needle valves.
