I noticed after ordering all my external parts (My long block is complete) I don't have any engine screws and bolts. I have an aluminum case not sure if that makes a difference on screw/bolt type. Anyone know the mm size/length/thread pitch needed for:
* Engine tins
* Alternator Stand to the block bolts
* Doghouse Cooler to the block
* Probably something Im forgetting...
Hardware store or worth waiting to order the "correct" type?
I have some misc. hardware already so I dont want to order a full kit if I dont need to. |

I think you can just get a bolt kit , might be cheaper |

Cheaper and nicer to buy the kits but they are M6 |

I like the flange head M6 bolts. They have them at our local auto parts store. I think it pays to be fussy about the type of fasteners you use. |

Cool I'll look at picking up a kit. In case I don't find one and need some odds and ends what's the thread pitch on the M6 1.25 usually isnt it? Or 1.50?
Thanks guys. |

I think it's M6x1.0 I coulld always look at my taps this weekend if you aren't in a rush. The smaller bolts don't usually use such a large thread as a 1.25 or 1.5
When in doubt take an old part with you. |

I use a lot of these black oxide SS screws myself (with just a dab of wheelbearing grease on them)....

Phil,
Heres a link to some stuff that I use.
http://carcraftstore.com/hardware.aspx ( lower bottom left)
I dont like using the nylon lock 19mm head main stud nuts. They come with all the bolts. I toss the copper nylon nuts. I cant remember I think they come with the tin screws too.

I use the 10mm head 1.25p/8mm nuts for manifold nuts to head and carb and for exhaust.
Tin screws for everything thats M6. I usually buy a few bags. I go thru these like pennies. M6 is usually 1.0p

The nuts which are utilzed on the various bolts and studs around the case perimeter joint, as well as the ones which fasten the alt stand to the block, the fuel pump to the block, and the doghouse oil cooler to the block are all M8x1.25.
If your engine has 8mm cylinder head studs (from about '72 on), those are also M8x1.25 threads. Earlier ones were M10.
the 6 large case nuts which are fastened near the cylinder openings on the one side are M12 x 1.5-

Here's a comprehensive pack which lists most of the sizes-
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Upright-Engine-Hardwa...t-10mm.htm
Another variation is the 4 nuts for the oil pump- M6x1.0 for the early cases thru approx. a 1500; M8x1.25 for the 1600 dual-oil relief. Either one should be the sealing-thread type. |

Engine tin screws are normally a special M6x10 screw with a floating washer and a cutout at the end of the threads to chase any beaten up threads.
Alternator stand normally uses nuts to secure the stand onto studs that come with the case, but M8x35s should be long enough.
A M8x35 should have enough thread engagement for the oil cooler too.
You can P/M me if you'd like and I can send you stainless 316 metric hardware for less than buying at the hardware store. |

Use studs and nuts on the alternator stand unless your case has threaded steel inserts installed in the case |
