What would the pros/cons be?
4wd hi/low
Fairly light weight(it would be if it was mine)
Lift tires 27 inch swampers possibly

Let me know your opinion and wat you think pros/con would be in your mind

No Pro's

Not much...
You could say it has an air cooled motor for bad a$$ points
Oil pan won't hang as low...but that really isn't a problem in the first place...

Cons:
Pretty much everything else in my opinion. The Subaru 4wd set up will not be of any advantage over the bugs rear wheel open drive. A bug works well off road because it has a heavy rear weight bias that more often than not keeps the driving wheels planted. The Subaru, although it would have a more even weight bias, wouldn't really have any advantage in the traction department. Also, the suspension will not do well at high speeds off road without major modifications, nor will it be any good at creeping over obstacles without major modifications. The chassis is also pretty flimsy.

Basically what you would end up with is a vehicle that is ok at some things but really isn't particularly good at anything.

This isn't any fault of putting a VW engine in a Subi... Truth be told, the Subi brat is just an unideal platform to start with.

I'm not looking for power I'm just building something that will be street able kinda. Mostly hunt out of and cruise around logging roads etc.

Interesting concept. I would do it just to do it. Wouldnt sink a ton of money into it though.

I was planning on $500 budget so most likely I'll put together a loyale and cut it into a truck or soft top the rear.

I'm having a hard time imagining how you plan to put together a functioning rig for 500 bucks... unless you already have everything on hand ready to go... still. That is really pushing it. Not saying it can not be done...just won't be easy to make a safe running driving vehicle for that.

Tell us more about your plans for this vehicle. That way we may be able to offer some more constructive advice. :wink:

I say go for it. I would like to see it done. You will get plenty of cons on here but I bet they would ALL look at the thread.

He could put a stockish type 4 vw engine in it. Not really any less powerful that the engine that would have come in the original vehicle. Plenty reliable as well :D

Downside is that a good type 4 engine is $$...certainly more than 500 bucks.

How are you going to make the VW motor run backwards? I thought they spin opposite of a Subi, do they make a reverse rotation cam for a VW like a Covair? How are you going to cool it? is there room for a fan shroud under the hood?

As far as I know the Subi rotates counter clockwise at the flywheel just like a VW. Correct me if I am wrong.

I dont know of anyone having to reverse the rotation of a subie engine when they put them in a bug, so why would they have to in order to go the other way?

There should be plenty of room if you use a pancake style cooling system. A type 3 or type 4 would fit no problem.

I can have the plate made for free. Just gotta design it off of a subie into bug plate. Everything else has been or will be made by me or free cheap parts.

No one said anything about safe or driven on the road for 5-10min periods in the middle of no where
