Hi VW people,

It's been some time since I was on this site but here I am again.

Does anyone have a Bosch Chart that shows the Part #s for each vehicle distributor? I run a 1969 Beetle 1500 and a 1972 Type 3 TLE (all standard Jetronic parts - with MPS units that I rebuild myself). I need to know the impedance of the Bosch condensers also. So then I can work out what condensers can be fitted to what cars and distributors. In many cases these components are interchangeable but only the length of wires and plugs are different for each condenser to be fitted to various distributors.

I am hoping somebody out there in VW-land has a file/chart that shows specs for the various Bosch condensers and what matches to points and even distributors.

I contacted Bosch in Australia - but they don't carry the technical specs for such old stock anymore. Even Germany could not help! Thanks, Len.

Good luck!

www.oldvolkshome.com has all the tune-up parts for virtually every distributor known to the VW world. It also has technical data for the dizzy, but NOT for each part though.

Hi guys

Yes I did find this table on tThe Samba website. But it does not give the impedance or specs for the condensers. Here is the problem.

The 1971 VW TLE (Jetronic Fuel injected model) runs a 02 039 condenser on the distributor.

The 1972 VW TLE (Jetronic Fuel injected model) runs a 02 054 condenser on the distributor.

While the Bosch distributor on each of these models is a different Part #, the cap, points, coil, spark plugs are the same for both models.

So the way I figure it is that the condensers 02 039 and 02 054 should be interchangeable between these two model years - but maybe the wires are different lengths.

Maybe I need the advice of an auto-electrician who know these Bosch parts?

Or if I can get the impedance values of each condenser that should nail it for me.

regards, Len.

Most condensers are interchangeable. The only difference is the wire and mounting tab.

Do you know if they would have different capacitance values?

Many years ago I took a GR capacitance bridge down to my local foreign car FLAPS and went thru as many of their Bosch capacitors as I could find in their stock. ALL the capacitances were the same.

While it's certainly possible that there are odd cars out there that use odd values, they must be in the minority. My impression, however, is that the vast majority use the same value and the only difference is the wires and mounting.

I'm afraid I can never remember what that value was. I could measure one again if you like, but I get the impression that you've already got the answer you wanted.

The final three digits in the Bosch parts numbers usually denotes the length of the lead wire. To my knowledge there is no difference in impedance.

The part numbers also help differentiate how the condenser attaches to the body of the distributor.

The oldvoikshome distributor list is very good but it DOES NOT contain every distributor known to the VW world. I have a thread here on the Samba on oddball distributors that is now up to five pages in length. Many of the distributors in the postings are stock. I prefer the list that's on here authored by glutamodo. His list is less confusing to use where as the oldvolkshome list has almost too much information esp for the novice.

Got a link?

My list can be found under the "Bosh Tune Up Parts Chart" link on the Technical Page.

yep! answers my question. I just wanted to know out of curiosity. Thanks.

Thanks Andy. :D

I have a capacitance checker and just measured 3 different condensers. They were all in the 180nF range. One was from a 009, the other was a 205AN and the last was a 031 (Porsche). So I tend to agree, that the numbers are primarily for mounting methods and wiring connections.

KTPhil Mon May 26, 2014 11:22 am

99% of all automotive condensers are rated from 0.2 μF to 0.33 μF, including those in our VWs.

Multi69s Mon May 26, 2014 11:33 am

so when we do the conversion 180nF = 0.18uF

KTPhil Mon May 26, 2014 11:42 am

Yup.

Hi Guys

And thank you for the intel on this vexing question.

I finally got hold of somebody at Bosch who also helped. All the Bosch condensers for VW/Porsche (that we are discussing here) seem to be the same impedance rating. 0.22MF.

There, so that nails it!

I thought this was the case - but the Bosch-man confirmed it.

Interesting about the last three digits in the Part # ID-ing the wire length. Seems logical. Anyway, now I'm set, I can go ahead and play away without any issue of condenser malfunction. Thanks to all for the input here. Regards, Len.
